Custom tools

I recently decided I would do a little side business making custom tools and the like. Not super crazy stuff, just tools that make your life easier, like a really long phillips head driver for that one screw on the airbox. If anyone has a tool they want made, let me know. I can make anything!

I need something to remove the oil filter in my 968! Conventional filter tools just don't fit without removing the airbox and mounting brackets. If you can devise something for that I'd be impressed. -Trevor

try to get a metal SOCKET that fits over the OIL filter and will let us put a socket wrench on it and turn..

Nearly all the tool vans (Snap-on etc..) sell the oil filter tool, or you can buy one from Schucks for about $4.00

Use a long screwdriver for the air filter screws.

Do any of you use the K&N oil filter? It has the nut on the top that uses like a 1 1/4" socket. Much easier, as I just changed my oil last week.

Oil filters are only supposed to be on hand tight. So if you put it on right, you shouldn't have a problem.

I agree with Stray15, oil filters should only be on 3/4 of a turn past the seal seating on the engine. However, sometimes a filter will tighten itself on the motor from all of the temp. fluctuations and a wrench might be necessary.

Can you make the timing belt tensioning tool for less than what it would cost to buy ? Or would it be too difficult because of the calibration ?

If you are talking about the $500 dial guage tool, no I cant make one of those. I'm talking mostly hand tools.

can you make a throddle cam? they are a simple design...

I would say yes, no problem, but would suggest cutting off the arm on the one you have for a free one. I did this and it worked prefectly. I just hacksawed off the arm and smoothed everything with a file and put it back on. worked like a charm.

Didn't think that you could.

Here's a cool way to make a throttle cam, I did it and it works great, and you can undo it if you hate it.... http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum5/HTML/004160.html

Shaun,

Snap-on make a metal oil filter wrench that fits right on 944/968. If it's really tight drill two holes in the wrench and then screw the wrench to the filter with large sheet metal screws...it will come off then!!

Don't have the number to hand but it's on page E43 of the Snap-On catalog

They also make a tool that are like plyers. They take filters off pretty easily. You guys are lucky that you don't have to change the oil on a Toyota Pasoe(sp?). Those are a pain the @$$ to get off. Another one is the honda CRV, when its been driven all day. I have a burn/scar the size of a golf ball on my left arm from removing the filter. So many stories, so little time.

On a side note, FRAM filters seem to be made out of really crappy/thin metal. Almost everytime I take one off, it ends up with at least one hole punchured in it.

I hope you are not using Fram filters on the Porsche. While they are good filters, have had oil pressure problems occur on 944s.
We always use German filters.

Nope, never used Fram. I always use Mahle. I was talking about oil changes on other cars. I've seen them all.
