First thing - I DO NOT want something heavy
Second Thing - I DO NOT want to 'thump' I want an 8" Subwoofer I guess. What's a good quality subwoofer? How much? How much are bass blockers? Anyone have any setups they could explain to me? Like how the speaker is fitted into the car...? I just basically need someone to tell me what 8" subwoofer to get and how to put it in... LOL all the guys at school have like Competition 12's and crap and won't give me the opinions I want, they just wanna go deaf. I just don't feel like learning about them really, lazy I guess - thanks in advance. |

There's at least 10 posts on this topic on rennlist and pelican. BTW - you may add weight to your NA unless you use the "floating" subwoofer and amplifier set-up.

I have an 8" Rockford Fostgate sub behind the two seats. Its just running without an amp and it sounds good.
I like the floating idea. ![]() Porsche, through and through Tim '83 944 My Photo Page My Home Page |

I am going to get the 8" Kicker Solobaric square subs when i put my system in. I believe that if you have the money these are pretty much the best out there and they require very little air space(.33 cubic feet/sub) which is ideal in our small hatchs.

The technology out there is great, so the Walmart stuff sounds just as good as the rest. I bought a 8" cannon for $69 and a amp for $29 at Walmart. Not only does it sound great, but it was inexpensive. You can buy high end, but coming from a person who engineers recording gear, I can not REALLY tell a significant difference. I also bought tweeters there and mounted them by the visors. Everything is great.....just like sitting in the studio....$129.

Any good ideas on how to mount a sub? I have a 10" MTX with a sealed enclosure, and that thing just slides around the back like nobodies business when I hit turns, and it usually ends up in one of the rear corners of my hatch area facing the wrong way. Is there some way I can mount it (its an angled carpeted box) into the carpet, like with L brackets or something that doesn't require me to drill into the sheet metal, and also so it is removable, just stays in place? I would like to hear ideas on this.

I've chosen this Subwoofer!
copolymer cone Santoprene rubber surround dual 2-ohm voice coils for wiring flexibility frequency response 28-100 Hz power range 75-450 watts RMS (225 watts per coil) peak power handling 900 watts sensitivity 85.1 dB SPL top-mount depth 4-7/16" sealed box volume 0.33-0.75 cubic feet ported box volume 0.66-1.0 cubic feet Now I need 1) Something to put it in 2) An amp, i noticed it was a dual 2-ohm so does anyone know what kinda amp I need for max RMS output of the sub? I'm a struggling person when it comes to sound! 1 - as far as the box, i'm for the box behind the passenger seat, who makes them, one that will fit that sub perhaps? Oh yeah, it's called the Kicker Solo-Baric L7 S8L7 8" I can get the Dual 4-ohm Sub, if it's easier/less expensive to get an AMP For it ;-) |

DO they make 8-inch SINGLE Bandpass boxes? If not what would be another good choice? I plan to put this behind the passenger seat.

Hello! I would look into a Polk Audio subwoofer if you want to spend the money....I used to be really inot the stereo stuff and they really jam regardless of what kind of bass you want!

Pics of my JL Audio Microsub here. Fits perfectly behind the driver's seat for no loss of space and it sounds awesome. And in the future, this is always a good link to check too: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ultimate/search.cgi?action=intro&default=5 - Leigh ------------------ Everybody in the world is bent. |

And I'm not commenting anymore on that. Also... "I also bought tweeters there and mounted them by the visors. " you are a sound recording engineer? Then wouldn't you know that you want your tweeters as close to your mids as possible? Up by the visor will give you latency and crosstalk in your sound, which WILL make it sound HORRIBLE. Maybe you're just deaf! I built my tweeters in behind the side air vents to keep them as close to the door speakers as possible. If you get a Rockford 8" Punch series Sub then you can build a speaker box (.33 cf) box into one of the side rear wheel tire wells, and place an AMP in with the spare tire. I did that, though I built a box into both rear wheel tire wells (2 8" subs) and am building a fiberglass box to run along the rear of the hatchback to put in two 5 1/2" wolfers too. In sound technology, you get what you pay for. Buy from Walmart, ya get crap. Try www.crutchfield.com They have the goods [This message has been edited by PrerYDoG (edited 10-03-2001).] |

Ok, I’m going to get that kicker baric solo. I have a lot of options (I guess) on where I could put it. I thought about this, putting wood over the spare tire well, and fitting it nicely. Then cutting a circular hole in it, and ‘dropping’ the speaker into it, so just the flat square is showing. Would that work? Would it be enough air space? Also, about the amp, do I need a ‘dual’ coil amp? Because these subs are dual coil 225watts per coil. If I got a 1x400watt amp and it only went to one coil wouldn’t it fry something? Are there sites out there where you pick a subwoofer and they match an amp with it? I picked out my subwoofer at crutchfield… I’ve decided I’m going to avoid putting a box in my car if possible and use the spare tire well as long as it will do ok. What’cha think???

Craig: Don't just drop some wood over the whole opening for the rear tire well. You need to custom build a box out of wood to drop down in there (it's not REAL hard, but it's not easy, I built two of them). But to answer your question, yes it will be safe.
The 1 X 400 Amp, stands for 1 channel, and yes, it should power your speaker (although, for one speaker, look at a 75 or 100 watt amp, and get a good amp, a Sony 75 Watt amp will out power and have higher quality than an off brand crappy 400 watt amp). |

Craig,
1) if you are going to get the solo-barics, you must put them in a sealed enclosure. 2) if you want to run a 4 - ohm amp then get the 2-ohm subs and wire them to 4-ohms, if you want a 2-ohm amp the get the 4ohm sub and wire it to 2-ohms. 3) as far as boxes go if you have any wood working tools it is fairly easy to build your own sealed enclosure. Use 3/4" MDF and int the manual with the sub it will tell you the exact dimensions to build the box. |
