Question 924 pressure accumulator

Just purchased this 1977 924, gas leak at the pressure accumulator. Paid $70 for the part at local VW parts place, could we have gotten it cheaper? Have no manual, how does one get a Haynes? We want to fix this gas leak so we can get driving, it's in great shape! Any tips on getting this accumulator off? Should we expect trouble with the gas lines coming in? How about undercoating? It's all flaked off underneath, but we've gotten conflicting views on what to do with it. Some say paint it with car paint, and others say rubberized coating. What do you think?

Hi Mary,

$80 is a good price. Several years ago, I paid $90 from a dealer & catalog places wanted more.

I think I rember acouple of fuel lines & a hose clamp type strap holding the acumulator to the car. I'll check when I get home if nobody else replies.

You can get the Haynes Manual at any auto parts store for about $15US.

Mary,

The way I would change Accumulator is:
1. Clamp lines closed.
2. Take the screw out of bottom of accumulator. If accumulator is bad, gas will probably come out.
3. Take lines & accumulator off of car.
4. Put new one on, hook up lines & unclamp them.
5. Check for leaks with system pressured up.

Drew, I sent my son under the blocked-up car and he skipped the clamping and unscrewing of the screw on the bottom. He did get a few dribbles of gas when he unscrewed the lines, and I guess if the accumulator had not already been leaking out of the screw on the bottom would we have had some other surprise? Thanks for the input.

Yep, it's running great. We had a rain the other night, though, and the passenger side floor got soaked from rain coming in the vents somehow. Also trying to figure out where the brake lights switch is cause they don't work. What kind of Porsche do you work on?

I work on 82 924 turbo, need to be working on my 914, which sits neglected.

Check the battery box for rust which may be eaten through & cause leaks to passengers side.

You've got a couple of replies to your brake light post.
