crank sensor
 

Where is the crank sensor located in an 83 NA engine? I just got the car, and the previous owner gave me a "new" crank sensor and said it may need to be replaced.
I haven't spent much time under the car, but certainly don't want to spend hours looking for a sensor. Any help, drawings, diagrams are appreciated.

I don't know about an '83', but on my '87' it's on the driver's side of the bellhousing near the top.

It's in the same place on the early cars. Try cleaning the old one first, sometimes this makes them work fine.

Why does the PO think it needs to be replaced?

My Bosch fuel injection book says the crank and/or rpm sensor failure causes a no-start. If it's running, it's probably ok.

he said possible causes are this sensor or the engine control unit. It has good compression, but as I said, I haven't spent much time on it. Hopefully this week i'll get to do all kinds of tests and determine what's wrong?

About the sensor again, do I have to remove the bell housing to get to it? is it towards the front of the vehicle near the intake or more towards the rear of the engine?

Mango944..Stop by your nearest auto parts store and get a Haynes Repair Manual for the Porsche 944, approx. $16.00 US. I think It will serve you well in learning about the 944, especially locations of parts.

Read my past posts on this subject and be careful. I lost the allen head socket inside the bellhouseing and spent a week of after work bullshet trying to fish it out with flexablbe magnets and flexable flashlite and to boot the flexable craftsman magnet fell of and got stuck in there too.

They are a simple magnetic pickup coil. Hook an ohm meter up to it, the connections are inside a bracket on the back of the intake manifold that holds the referance sensors and the O2 sensor. Have an assistant crank the car over look for changes in the resistance. Thats how you know they are working. Or if you have a really great set of tool's hook it to an O-scope and watch the wave as it's cranked over.

I got my parts CD last night and got some diagrams, but couldn't exactly find anything called "crank sensor"
There is a couple of sensor connected to the DME that look just like it, maybe these are the guys I'm looking for.
Scott, thanks for your tips. I'll definitely be playing w/ my multimeter and remote starter this weekend, but will be doing other tests as well.
If anyone needs any info from the parts CD, lemme know. Hint: the diagrams are posted on the pelicanparts website under 944 diagrams. they just don't have the part numbers.

I think they're more commonly refered to as "Flywheel Sensors".......

Is that the stubby sensor right below the speed and reference sensors? If so it's pretty easy to get to...i took mine off to get it out of the way while doing my clutch.
