Hello everyone,

Thinking of doing some things to my '87 NA.

As I was peeling back the carpeting in the hatch area, I came across a square (approximately 5" X 5") of a white synthetic type padding which, when peeled back revealed some electrical connectors and/or switches.

Question 1: What is that which I have exposed? I am assuming it is related to the fuel tank, but have no idea beyond that.

Question 2: I am thinking of eliminating the rear seats on the car and doing something else with the space. Has anyone taken the rears out, how much is involved, and what have you done with the space?

Questioin 3: What is the easiest way to get my lock codes for my keys? The 1 key I have with the car know is too far worn to copy, and I need to cut from the code.

1) that would be your sending unit for fuel level...in other words, the gas gauge gets its input from those wires.

2) lots of people take them out, it's fairly easy, many have replaced the seats with a speaker box.

3)with a copy of your title and the VIN from your car you can get a new key from a Porsche dealer...it'll be pretty steep though.

Fuel level sending unit should have a hard plastic cover over it.

Not much room under the rear seats for much of anything. Just deduct the three inch thinkness of the seat padding to get the idea.

Cost me $30 for a key via vin.

Mine definitely has a cover with a piece of white insulation on it, maybe they added this only to later cars?
As for the key, that's a lot cheaper than I would have assumed. Did that include the cost of the key blank and everything?

I get a slight discount from my local Porsche dealer & mine came to $27.00 total (key blank, cut from my vin #).

If anyone has any pictures of a 944 with the rear seats removed, I would appreciate you posting them.

yep, 1 is the fuel sending unit - 3 wires (one is ground, one is the idiot light, and one is the level signal) / 2 is yes, it's easy to do if you want / 3 is off the VIN - exactly what everyone else said.

Appreciate all of the help, is there a step by step to getting out the back seats?

Question 2 - somebody said recently that the 968 cab storage units fit 944s (can't confirm that, though).
