Think the fuel pump died need advice

Driving the car down the road after morning start-up not even a mile away and it died. Started right up again and died immediately several times. After sitting there pissed off for a few, -I was on my way to a parking lot where it would sit all day with a FOR SALE sign in it -I started it up and it ran rough for a second then was fine. Decided to take it home and when pulling into the parking lot I could really hear the fuel pump groaning up a storm. It would change pitch a little sometimes with the pedal movement but it has got to be a fuel pump. Soooo, where will I find this pump? Do I have a secondary pump in the tank and the main one in the line? Or just the main one in the fuel line? Also, what will one expect to pay for a fuel pump?
Thanks in advance. btw: the car is leaving us because we just bought a house... no other reason. I really want to keep it!
620.00 all belts and rollers
300.00 for 1 rear wheel bearing set
220.00 for 2 front tires
countless time for buffing and waxing... guards red -wish I had black or yellow.

Yeah, these cars seem to go through money, especially if you don't do the work yourself. But the car is also 21 years old... There is only one fuel pump, by the gas tank, mounted on the side in plain view. I got my replacement from NAPA for about $70 or $80 I think. I got it about 2.5 years ago and it's been running fine since.

Cost you at least $400 per month to replace the 944 with an equally performing car.

I find mine costing about $100 per month in maintenence and repairs. I drive it every day.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Hugh is spot on. the car is not worth enough to be a real liability. even if it did start to 'nickel-and-dime' you at the rate of a few hundred dollars every odd month or so, it still would be much cheaper than replacing it with something newer. keep the car, fix it, and enjoy

Say you had to drop $2,000 into it every three years.

$2,000 divided by 36 months is $56 per month. Maybe $75 per month if you had to borrow the money.

You can not beat the cost per performance of these cars.
