Stats of 968
I have the bug! An 83 944, by the weekend a 78 928. I was wondering what the stats are on a 92 968. A friend of mine has one for sale. I was wondering hp,torque, mpg's? Are they pretty much new/improved 944's? Anything you could tell me would be great. Value? I think it has 100k miles and is an automatic(I would prefer manual, but it is a nice looking car)Not sure of LSD any way I could tell off vin# or door markings. Thanks in advance

I love them, but I wish they had made more manual tranny models.

Heard the tiptronic tames the power. I prefer 6-spd. One of the best looking Porsches ever produced, imho. But I am biased.

968's are nice cars. I have a '92 myself. It's quicker than a stock turbo, without the turbo lag, but a bit slower than an 88 Turbo S / 89 Turbo.
Interior wise, they're virtually identical to a late 944. Hp/Tq specs are something like 236hp & 225 ft-lbs for US spec cars. Just like the 944, extra power is difficult to find and very expensive to get. The chassis is basically the same as the late 944, with bigger sway bars and the 944 turbo brakes. the weight is a little more, just over 3000 lbs dry, so you can't throw it around quite as easily as your early 944. The look, well that's a matter of personal opinion. I like mine, but others may not. www.968.net forums - http://65.61.16.109/forum/default.asp is where you want to go for specific questions about the 968. This board only has a few 968'ers At 100K the big maintenence thing you're going to need to do almost immediately is replace the variocam tensioner / tensioner pads. This is part of the cam timing mechanism, and failure has the same consequence as a timing belt failure on a 944 (only to damage twice as many valves) Other things to watch out for are the same as 944's belts, water pump, front seals. I know nothing about the TipTronic As far as price is concerned, does anyone have a copy of last months Excellence Magazine? there was an article on 924/944/968 values. Off the top of my head i would think somewhere in the 11K-14K range with that mileage. Ask on 968.net for a better idea on price. Mike |
236 peak HP, 225 peak torque. 0-60 in 6.2 sec. Not too shabby

Thanks for all the info. Nice car, but I do not know if I can get a Porsche with auto. I love the look also. It is a coin flip. 944 handling, but better performance-why can't it be a 6 speed?
|
968 was a 6-speed, on the manual versions.

I wouldn't even consider a 944/911 auto...but a 968 Tip? Yeah. Just one handsome bastard's opinion:D GHEN |
hey i just noticed that three of the posters in this thread live within 20 mins of one another :)
z3davis, if you ever see a white 944 in the Avon/Farmington/Bristol area, it's probably me. And if you ever see a white 968 in the same area, it's probably Mike. :) |
