H4 Conversion Kit
I have seen the H4 Hella Kit from Pelican but I have also found a Bosch Kit thats local to me so I wouldnt have to pay shipping, usd, duty etc. Does anyone have any experience with either Hella or Bosch?
|
well i bought H4 headlights for my 944... no "kit" was needed. They are much brighter - especially on high beam - than the stock units
|
Yeah, they aren't really kits but just lenses and the H4 bulb. That Hella lens Pelican sells is an old E-Code lens that has been around for ages. It is OK but not the greatest. The Hella Super would be a better choice if you want to stick with Hella but they are more expensive and pretty hard to find for sale in North America. They would probably be about $120 a pair without bulbs.
Are the local Bosch lenses E-Code or DOT? You want to go with E-Code so if price is a big factor may as well go with the Bosch. I could sell you some Cibie E-Code lenses for $105 a pair without bulbs but you would be facing the same shipping cost, foreign exchange, etc., costs. |
Listen to Ice Shark - he's the man.
BTW I'm still interested in your whole setup, grounding wires, rear & side bulbs, etc. that you quoted me on R/L a while back, but I've got some other things to settle up first - probably be a few weeks. |
I bought two H4 sets from Iceshark and installed them a couple of months ago...what a difference this makes.
Here is a recent discussion thread on his product: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=134230&highlight=icesha rk |
WOW! What a difference, I havent actually driven the 944 at night yet but I can definatly appreciate how the upgrade would be a lot safer.

Here is the listing, I have also email asking if they are DOT or Ecode.
|
Hmm, let us know which they are.
There is a store here selling those exact same lenses, with 55/60W phillips (I believe) bulbs for $60 CDN. If they are E-Code, then I think it's a good investment. Even if they're DOT, I bet they are much better than the 7" sealed beam's. For what it's worth, if Iceshark ships USPS, and checks the 'gift' box, and lowers the declared value, you could probably save a ton of money ordering from him. Used that trick before =) |
Those Bosch lenses in the E-Bay listing look like E-Code lenses by the fluting in the glass, though the picture isn't the sharpest. But you are going to be up over $100 USD by the time you win them and get them shipped. I thought the whole point was to get these cheap locally and that is why you were thinking about Bosch?
BTW, there is no duty between USA and Canada. There are brokerage fees if UPS or FedEx are used. There are also sales taxes but you will get hit with those whether you import from the states or buy locally. And you will be getting hit with foreign exchange rates unless the product is made in Canada - the only big difference is whether the exchange rate is hidden in the product price or you pay as a seperate line charge. |
Even "cheap" E codes are better than the sealed beams. I've had mine for 19 years. Was the first thing I changed when I bought the 83 in 85.
Time for a head light wiring and DME chip update. |
