Well, it happened.

I knew that the clutch was on it's last leg from the sound of the clunking.

Well, today (saturday) I was driving from SanDiego to Orange County (90 miles) and luckily I was only 15 miles from home and 10 miles from a German Car repair place.

Well, I was going up a hill and all of a sudden the RPMs went up and the car stopped moving. This was not a good thing.

Anyway, time to get Raped by the shop doing the repairs.

If I had a place to do it, I would of course do it myself....

Whats the actual book time for the plate replacement ???

Can I replace a plastic centered clutch with a spring centered one without changing the pressure plate or anything else ???

Rubber center clutch. Yes you can replace just the disc. IF your TO bearing is reuseable. If not I would buy one of those too.

I'm hoping that they can find a used on.

I want to put on the whole 22 piece kit, but don't even have the money for the disk.

So, I could drive on a used one for a month then get the kit and put it on.

The throw out bearing shouldn't be too much money.

Why does this stuff always happen when your broke.

Oh, SoCal, I'm now working all over OC & LA....

I hate to tell you but the ***** is that with the labour to change the disk I would not recomend the used one. The labour is around 16 hrs so once you pay that much to change it, the extra $$ for the right parts seems cheap compared to doing the labour twice.

Well, it seems my new job can front me the $$, so since I am paying huge labor charges I might as well do it right..

"by the book" it is 12 hours labor for a 944 clutch,

more if it is a turbo

Well, since I have nowere to work on it, I have it sitting outside a german repair place that opens on monday.

I guess, I'll just bite the bullet and get raped on the labor.

Don, why do you keep saying "raped' regarding labor costs.
The charges are what it takes to run a shop nowadays. You may not like it, but that's what it is. Shops invest a considerable amount of money in equipment, training and finding qualified techs. If I said your labor charges were unjustifyably excessive, you probably would not agree, but the shop charges what it takes to make a profit, just like you.

By the way, are you sure it's the clutch? sounds more like r&p failure to me.

You are right about what shops charge, they do need too make a profit. It is a costly business to be involved in......

What makes it difficult for most is that it is one of those industries that the bad apples get all the publicity. Everyone has a lousy experience of bad service or being over charged...... maybe not the norm but it sure feels that way sometimes.

....and once you have been stung..... you just want to assume the worst.

I think we've all been stung once... Those of us who haven't are lucky

Oh, I have no oposition to shops making money on labor and also to mark up parts.

The guy told me this morning that it would be $ 1900.00 to do it.

The parts were $900...

Thats about 40% markup, but I have NOWHERE to do the work myself.

If they would install NEW parts that I bring, it would be better, but they said that they wouldn't..
This is also the same shop that charged me $240 to plug in the O2 sensor ( that they know wasn't making contact when they did the smog inspection ) .

But, I have to have the car running...

I seriously need another 944 in better shape to drive when I do stuff on the 85..

I'm kidding, im kidding... Do you have another DD car? This weekend i'll get a fun experience in removing the clutch, transmission, torque tube... everything south of the engine on the drivetrain. We both have the factory service manuals from SoCal (thanks!), I know i do. Nothing but long days and torque settings (follow instructions like lego instructions).

Why do not you have room to perform this? Do you get one parking space at your apartment complex? Im sure we could get it up on jack stands in a 'COMPACT' parking space. I've had to do all sorts of service on my cars on the street, with traffic. Oh yeah, i live dangerously.

yeah, Don. Take your not so tender fondling like a man! I feel for ya. I spent 3 nights after work changing my head gasket on the turbo in a "manufactured home community" that doesn't allow even oil changes. Every night I would have to button it up so that while I was at work, it looked like I was inside watching cartoons. When I'd come home, I'd restart the repair and have to keep an eye peeled for the manager that smelled the repair going on and circled my block like a buzzard on the scent of carriion.

Oh big piles of horse manure!

Half to two thirds the Porsche shops around here have $10 per hour illegals doing most of the drudge work.

Been to all of them looking for a job. Highest "compensation" I was offered was $14 per hour. Per HOUR not flat rate hour.

Hugh, that maybe (but I doubt it) in your neck of the wood. I know all the local Porsche shops around here and they use skilled technicians as do the local German car specialists. Anyone who believes that a shop can use cheap labor for any length of time and make a profit working on Porsche or any other exclusive make, is dreaming. I don't know of any skilled German car tech earning less than $20 p.h. on flat rate, most are on considerably more. Flat rate is dying out anyway, in the future techs will be salaried with a profit bonus. I run a shop and also keep in contact with not only our competition but also other German car specialists so I know what's going on......
