Belt disaster overted.
My belt area has had a really bad history this year.
After my last oil seal redo the car was acting a little different.... You may have remembered my posts on 'dead spots' and 'rpm problems under load' ....so I finally get around to pulling the dist. cap and belt covers...... Holy *****! Notice how the balance belt is completely in pieces and frayed like rope at the bottom. Notice how the drive belt has been erroded away to less than a cm. of width. Notice how there is belt "fuzz" all over the cam gear. I have to get in there and see what failed in order to assess the damage. I think my rear belt box bolt on the drivers side backed out....could be wrong though....... If that belt snapped I would have really lost it!

Wow, you are lucky. I just have some oil on mine and I'm not driving it till I replace belts, rollers and seals. Don't forget to show us what went bad.

I had a similiar problem when I installed the crankshaft timing gear on backwards. The belt started wandering off the cam gear and tearing to shreads.

That is the funny thing Hugh....It really wasn't vibrating that badly.....It just sounded noisier on the drivers side.
That was the first thing I though when I got into the belt area. I could not beleive it wasn't vibrating like crazy.. Go figure.

I'm going to be replacing the belts on my new '86 951, since the PO didn't have any records on when it was last done. Does anyone know if it is possible to swap the eccentric tensioner for the spring loaded tensioner that came on the '87+ models? If so, is it worth it?
