Speedo functions, but odometer and "trip odometer" no longer functions....
Is there an electical circuit or mechanical connection which may have come loose? or is this, as I believe it is, a situation which requires replacement of unit? Thanks. Bart |

Hey there! I am dealing with this as we speak. Go to clarksgarage.com and look of the odometer repair section. You will basically have to take out your instrument cluster, which clarksgarage has great direcitons for, and then unscrew your speedo. You will look to see if the infamous odometer gear is worn out, which is most likely the case. If it is, they have a replacement for $30 on klaindustries.net. There is an off chance that the gear has simply moved off axis, which would mean simply moving it back into place and securing it with crazy glue, but in all likelihood it is the stripped gear problem.
To do all of this, all you need is a philips screwdriver, a flathead driver, and a socket big enough for the steering wheel (I can't remember the size, but you need to pull the wheel to get the cluster out). |

You will want to disconnect the speed odometer cable on the 83 as well. More than likely the gear is fine and has just moved out of place. The crazy glue should solve your problem.

Oops... he's right- I didn't see you had an early model. Check out frwilk's site for your odometer info.

Be careful of the MPG sensor on the back of the speedometer. I (accidentally) pulled hard on the speedomter while removing it and broke the circuit board on the back of mine. Super glue, solder and it was all good again.
