Interesting death of a 944
86 944 automatic, 86,000 miles.
Complaint is no oil pressure, engine sounds terrible when running Background: Oil was changed at "jiffy lube" Oil change technician left the old oil filter gasket on, then screwed a new filter right on top of it. Catastrophic oil loss, top blown off of oil filter. Oil was changed by someone (not us). Leakdown marginally acceptable - 6% - 10% No bearing material in oil, crankcase overfull, 8 - 9 quarts of oil in oil pan. Large chunks out of oil pan: one was about 0.5 inches long, the other was 4 inches long. Chunks look like someone took a sheet of metal and wadded it up in a ball. Cause of Death: Failure of the oil return tube, which was caught in the crank, tearing out the oil pickup tube as well. AFJuvat

Cool, luckily "Jxxxxy Lxxe" has insurance for just that eventuality.
It wouldn't be the first time they had to buy an engine. The adjuster will come round and examine the estimate, then their check writing team will pay up. Just get the customer to make the claim.

Hey, we're a franchise!!!
I want to know how it made it out of there...like you won't notice the oil it's pissing when you start it..hmm... Glad it wasn't my store, when something breaks they pay for it with our commission checks.

In the case that I am aware of the master franchiser holds the liability insurance for franchisees. The adjuster thar examined the car we were dealing with had just come from another shop that had a Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo that the oil change shop had not refilled with oil ..

Jiffy Lube sucks balls.
The ONE time my wife tried to do me a favor and take my truck in there years ago the retards torqued the freakin' oil filter on so tight I literally had to use one of those serrated "claw" things to tear it off, then skewer the center part with a screwdriver and use a breaker bar on it to get THAT off. Ridiculous. A 20-minute oil change turned into a 4-hour project that required about three separate trips to the local auto parts store. Do these clowns really think that by over-tightening the oil filter I'm going to give up and say "oh gee, I can't handle it, I'll just go back there and let them rape me for another 30 bucks?" NOT!

FYI, factory filters are put on by machine with no oil on the gasket.

I can't speak for the oil filter - it was replaced by the time it got to my shop. Most places (and people) overtorque the filter
I will say the drain plug was WAY over-torqued. Enough to where is made a depression in the sealing ring. Haven't told the customer yet, did not want to spoil his weekend. AFJuvat

The first time I changed the oil, I had to use an impact gun at 120 psi to get the drain plug loose. I have a different oil pan now. AF, if you don't mind me asking, why wouldn't some one use a high temp RTV sealant instead of a crush washer on the drain plug?
