power loss update, new problems
Thanks to everyone for all the help so far. I am a complete newbie to working on cars, and I haven't been able to convince my gearhead friends to help me yet so I am still trying to gather information.
My 85.5 944 NA is loosing rpms and sometimes cutting out completely mostly on the freeway after its warmed up. When it completely dies the ! light comes on, headlights stay on etc but the engine is stopped. I generally have to give it anywhere between 0-20 seconds before it will restart. Today I found that the DME is burning hot to the touch after driving for 35-40 mins. Is that normal? Its a brand new, non-chipped DME. Also today it did something new. Driving on the freeway engine started to die, so I put the clutch in and it went to 2000 rpm instead of dropping down to where it normally idles around 900. Put it in gear, out of gear, didnt matter it stayed at 2000 rpm, give it gas and it would go to 2100 but no higher. Finally I pulled over, shut it off and let it sit for a sec, and then back on and everything else was fine for the rest of the drive home. I still need help checking the fuel regulator, as I have no idea where the fuel rail is. pictures somewhere? Thanks, Max

ok maybe I am referring to the wrong thing.. maybe I am referring to the DME relay?
Its in the fuse box at G5 I think? Its burning hot, and I know the PO replaced it just before I got the car.

i used to have the same prob too...my throttle wasnt closing all the way (cable was too tight) and the TPS sensor was never hitting the fully closed position..the car used to idle at 2000...after i bent the bracket and slacked the cable the car idles at 900...

Thanks FR Wilk and yes Brando I just went digging through the search to see what else was going on. Can't believe I didn't do that before.
I will try the throttle thing as soon I can, but remember I am a newbie. I have the shop/repair manuals from porsche and I suspect you are talking about the "throttle valve housing" which is where the throttle cable attaches from the pedal? So I am looking for a 3 pin connector on that?

no no... I just unplugged it, but I can't drive anywhere until I am off work in a couple of hours. I was just wondering what it was that I unplugged?
