if the price of the ticket was over $200 i think it is you can contact ebays safe harbor and their insurence would pick it up. if not that they would be able to help you with any legal terms. the auctions can be used as legal binding contracts.

Speak to the mechanic.

If he is telling you the truth, he just did you a very big favor. 74 911 has a magnesium case - very expensive to fix if there are issues.

Otherwise, hang him.

there is no mechanic...the guy wouldn't even give me his phone number.
Literaly in two hour, while I booked my flight and withdrew the cash, the guy e-mailed me that the car blew up, he towed it to the mechanic and the mechanic bought it from him for parts. when I sent the guy my number he never called back.
Oh well...like you said could have been worse...
Meanwhile please keep an eye out on an early 911s (anything until 1980) for me anything south of $8K, I don't mind doing a little wrenching to bring it up to par....
