hey I didn't have time to really dig through the forums but I was wondering where we put our subs? I want to put one where the spare goes? wondering if anyone has done this, or where I can buy one that is made to go there? I'd just like to get 1 10" sub back there and Im sure its been done before, let me know guys, thanks

It's been done as well as stuffing smaller subs in the rear quarter voids.

I am looking into similar things.

The concern I have with the spare area and both right and left storage bins is moisture. All these areas seem to get damp. Not the best thing for subs.

I have tried the spare tire area. To get a good sound, you would need to seal it off really good and eliminate some of the space unless you have a big enough sub. The area was too big for my Rockford 10" so i just put it in a pre-made box for now. I am thinking about removing the rear seats and making something there. I put 6x9's in the cubby holes.

thats not a bad idea.... will a regular 10" sub box fit in there?

the one i have wouldnt fit. you would have to get one custom made so that it would curve at the bottom. i just have mine sitting in the hatch area for now.

Im surprized I can't find anyone that has had this done... it seems like something that would be common, I can't even find any boxes made by qlogic or anyone.... if you guys know of any let me know

Better bet might be to make one that drops in that area but is only half the size of the hole

No rounded bottom just flat.
You could lift the box out and still have storage underneath for toolkit, whatever. Or, for that matter, you could mount the amp inverted(on the bottom of the box) and still have airspace so it would cool.


Actually sounds very straight forward. You would just be building a rectangular box with enough depth for proper bass airspace.


CJ - weight would be offset by the deletion of the rear spare..(not that I recommend getting rid of that)

I don't have a spare, as with many of us. Besides, I wouldn't trust a collapsable spare after 20 years anyways. If I had a flat, I sure as hell wouldn't inflate that thing and drive on it.

It would work pretty well to make a drop-in box for the spare tire area. The volume down there is approx 1.5ft^3, maybe 2ft^3, depends on the exact shape of your box. That's a little much for most 10's, unless you port the box, then 1.5ft^3 is just about right =)
My reccomendation, if you want nice even frequency response, build a 0.75 - 1.0ft^3 rectangular sealed box, perhaps curve the sides if you would like, but leave the bottom flat, and mount the amp on the bottom. Seal the little holes in the spare tire area with grommets, or rubber plugs, or whatever, to keep your amp and wiring dry.
However, if you're looking for peak volume, or just a louder box, build a 1.5ft^3 ported box, this will probably require some fiberglassing to make a nice curve on the bottom, and mount the amp under the passenger seat. Again, seal the holes in the bottom of the spare tire well.

I think the weight is very comparable to the spare tire, if you use all fiberglass, it may even be lighter.
Just remember to seal up the spare tire holder, as MDF does not like moisture.

Do you have the runoff pipes connected to the bottom of your boot latches? If not, this is where the water is comming from.

cool, thanks for the in depth zero, I'm going to start construction this weekend... I guess this is the kind of project that comes up when theres no motor in your car! haha I can't wait to get it on the road.. Im so anxious... so MDF wood is the best choice since I have no experience with fibreglass? where can I get the wood cut to the sizes I need? thanks again

I think someone over at rennlist.com 944 board did some enclosers and is selling them.

The set up I wound up doing was just a 10" Bazooka mounted along the back of the fold down rear seat...It's light sounds great and does not get affected by moisture...Even with the luggage cover in place the sound still rides up the back window and into the cabin area...Just a thought...I think it was around $100?

not a bad idea either... like I said, I shoudl probabally worry abuot getting the car running before I worry abuot getting some bass... :)

you guys wouldn't happen to know the dimensions of a box that would fit most snugly in the spare area would you? I know I should just go measure it but I'd have to drive to get there and if you guys know off the top of your heads it could save me a trip, lte me know

klaindustries makes a box that fits in the spare tire well.

That box looks cool when the seat is up, but a little wacky when the seat is down.
Fiberglassing isn't hard, just time consuming, and smelly. If you don't want to be itchy for a week, don't do it =)

You can find MDF at pretty much any building store, e.g. Home Hardware, Home Depot, Rona, etc....

I'm in the process of custom-fabricating a box that will take the place of my back seat.

I kind of like that flip down feature. You still lose a little storage space though. It might be cool to have two separate boxes at either end that swivel so you can keep them pointed towards the hatch.
