a few problems
 

I got the na up and running and now after sitting for so long my fuel gauge and speedometer are not working. What should I do?

Start by checking the fuses and grounds on the car, Im not sure where the speed pick up is on a early 944

speedo is cable driven in the early ones

right. i just pulled my speedometer in my 83.

the speedometer cable runs, more or less, through the center of the drivers side front wheel, through the engine compartment, firewall, and to the back of the speedometer. the easiest way to check it, IMO, is to pull the speedometer.

1 pull ground from battery.

2 remove steering wheel. pull horn pad off, 24 MM nut is underneath.

3 remove turn signal/wiper switches and housing. a screw on either side of assembly. takes some doing, but plastic housing will come off.

4 remove two screws in bottom side at the top of guage cluster in the fuel guage and tach sides.

5 carefully pull guage cluster from dash till you can get a hand behind the tach. remove all wires etc, and push tach guage out of cluster. it is friction fit, so it comes out but may take a bit of force.

6 you can then reach through tach hole and undo speedometer cable from the speedo by hand and see what is going on with cable. also, you can turn the speedometer by hand to see if it is still functioning. let me know if you need pics or anything.
