is it safe/ok to drive on tie rod ends and lower ball joints if the boots are shredded? even if they feel like they are in there very tight? what kind of damage could this cause?

Uhmmm you can drive that way.......
Those ball joints will be toast soon enough. Nothing like dirt in a nice smooth joint. Just check for play every once in a while. ? but you have the steel control arms on that 924S? those are cheap and easy to replace.

The boots are to protect the joints from dirt and keep the grease in. With the boots torn, it does not make it unsafe. It just allows then to go bad faster. dirt and debris will get in and wear at the joint and wash the grease out. There are replacement boots out there like at napa and pepboys and such, you may find some that fit.
