car's got issues.
I took my 944 out yesterday afternoon; I was going for a run at a nearby wildlife sanctuary, which is about 2.5 miles from my house. Car ran fine on the way there.
After my run, I started her up and noticed that she was running a little noisier than usual. I popped the hood, and sure enough there was some kind of rattle coming from somewhere in the engine bay. I couldn't locate exactly where, however. After about 2 minutes of idling, the rattle seemed to subsist. I also noticed that my fuel guage showed a little less than 1/4 of a tank remaining... i decided to make the gas station my next stop. On my way, the car started stumbling a bit, as if it wasn't getting enough fuel. It was almost choking. I pulled over, and the car was idling much lower than normal, still choking, at about 600rpm. I turned off the engine, and tried starting it again. It would almost turn over, but not quite. I let it sit for a moment and started it again. It started, so i drove it home and parked in the garage. Later that night, before I had to go to class (i drove the Olds, needless to say), I started up the 944... it started right up, but there was that rattle again! This morning I did the same, and it started up and ran smoothly... and with no rattle. When I shut the car off this morning, however, there was some kind of rattle as the engine turned off and came to rest. I started it again and got the same result. It almost sounded like something was loose. Now, since I never let my gas tank drop below 1/4 tank, my first instinct tells me that there is just some sludge/moisture at the bottom of the tank, and letting it run through caused this stumbling... but that doesn't explain that rattling. Any ideas? Is the rattling just a coincidence, and an unconnected problem?

When you say "it almost turned over" do you mean it almost started (engine turning over but not catching), or that the engine literally didn't quite manage to turn over?

That's some noisy gas!
Rattles are from moving/rotating objects. Belt pullies and rollers, alternators, power steering, V-belt pulley on the front of the crank may be loose. Cam pulley may be loose.

Yeah i think there is something loose... but I ALSO think there is a gas-related issue. Whether the two are mutually-exclusive has yet to be seen.

Use a breaker bar or piece of metal pipe as a stethoscope.
Place in various (safe) places on the engine with your ear to it, great tool for finding bad bearings, rattles, etc. |
