cam gear bolt, drill out vs leave alone?

Hey 944 group:

As careful as i was trying to remove 8v cam gear bolt i still managed to smooth the bolt. no way its coming off. i was doing belts and the water pump so i was going to do all seals. the cam seal or at least the area around the cam is dry as a bone. both balance seals look fine but i am changing them anyway. crankseal is leaking. seals are around 7 years old maybe 20,ooo miles.

would you leave the cam bolt and seal alone? and hope for the best?

or drill out the cam gear bolt?

if i drill out the bolt should i use a helicoil to fix the thread??

thanks guys...john

As long as you didn't loosen it in any way. Let the next owner take care of it. Then you become the SOB PO!

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

This might be one of those times where you let a machine shop swear and cuss. Much easier then spending a day drilling.

Once you drill the head off the cam gear bolt, you can remove the mount for the rotor and the cam gear, and what's left of the bolt will spin out with your fingers. No need to drill anymore or re-tap threads. Just have a good new bolt in hand, and the proper 8mm triple square tool to tighten it up, and bob's your uncle...

With a proper sized cobalt drill bit (Pep Boys) you can cut the head off to the bolt's shank in seconds. This does not include the time to go to Pep Boys and buy the bit.

I use the cobalt drill bits on the early A-arm rivits.

Cobalt is the way to go........You have other choices but its true It will go right through that bolt in no time. Once the tension is off the bolt it will come off with your fingers.

JUST DONT DRILL to deep.
