1983 California 944 to ROW?

Hey, gents,

I've got a 1983 CA 944. I've also got a 1985 Canadian (or US) wreck here.

First off, what exactly makes the CA model what it is? So far I've only had some sketchy descriptions about it that deal with the O2 sensor.

I'd like to install the FR Wilk chip, but was wondering if I should swap the 85 DMA for the 83 CA one first. I assume this would mean using the 85 barn door and O2 sensor. I know the 83-85.5 DMEs are the same, but what about CA vs 49 States?

I've had a good boo at Wilk's website and will make the mods suggested.

Ideas? Thoughts? Concerns? Comments?

Slam

I have a mixed breed 85 DME in my Cali 944.

since California required higher standards of emissions before other states around 1985, it seems that there are subtle differences in the early 85 models. I would probably prefer a cali 944 if it was an early 85 because it would have more of the 85+ features found on later models.
Thats just my preference.
I also happen to like the pre 85 interior.

Just re-read your post.

Don't count on it. Like I said before, mine doesn't look like any other one that I have seen on photos.

now, even I'm confused

Actually, I'm wondering if the Cal cars got a special DME that would be best replaced with the one out of the '85 (non-Cal) model. The 83 is the one I'm driving - soon...

Air(smog) pump and DME settings? I'm just guessing of course.

I have an 86 DME and MAS in my 83. About the only real differences, besides the programming, is how the different units bolt in. Since the later DME's were in the passenger kickpanel, and the early's were under the steering column. I went with the newer DME to eliminate the shudder issue, and to allow for it to simply take the plug in chip if I decided to chip it.

No, the California cars used the exact same DME as US and all of ROW cars as well. There's three maps on the chips and combinations of the RCP and IA are used to select one of those three maps for differnent regions of the world.

no smog-pump on 944s.. those were out by the late '70s. Three-way catalytics do a much better job of cleaning up emissions and doesn't hut engine-power as much.
