Porsche Crest Gear shudder

Hi.

I have a 944 s2 cab. When I gear down from 3rd to 2nd the gearlever shudders quite violently. This does not happen when gearing down through other gears nor does it happen on gearing up. I have had the gearbox mounting checked and that seems fine. Any ideas or similar problems experienced?

Thanks.

Check the linkage over the top of the transmssion and the couplers to the shafts sticking out of the transmission. Could have it trying to go into two gears at the same time.

Needs a clutch, probably the beginning of the end of the rubber hub.
Usually, if you get a good tech to drive it, they will get this problem in most of the gears.
Normal sign is the vibration seems to sound or feel like the exhaust hitting the body.

Thought that by the time the S2 was produced Porsche used spring center clutch plates as standard?

depends, if original or not-that-long-ago replacement, it could well be rubber. I know we did one a few years ago that was.

Do some rev matching down shifts and the shudder will disappear.

Yes Britwrench, you did my S2 with a rubber center some years back, it lasted ALOOOOT longer than the original. I had mine done again last year and it was replaced with a spring center. After that, I had the exact same problem, shudder only when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd, all other gears ok. It has lessened over time, but it is still slightly there.

As I understand it, they were rubber-centered all the way up through '91.

Thanks, guys. I'll start with rev-matching downshifts and then check the rubber hub and linkages and let you know what works.
