Hi folks-
As some of you may recall, I bought my '83 944 late last year and it came with no service records. It's my weekend driver and I didn't use it much during the winter months. I wasn't surprised that the car wouldn't start a number of times due to the battery dying, so I figured I'd do the smart thing and replace it. Well, the new battery started dying on me too. I was going to take the car out yesterday on a beautiful Maryland day when I had the same problem. I hadn't used in three weeks, so I figured that perhaps it was sitting too long. Well, I had all afternoon to kill as I put the battery on the charger and it dawned on me that a number of you had posted to look for a bad ground, as it was a common problem. I disconnected the ground strap and wirebrushed the firewall where the bolt connects as well as the bolt and washer. Well guess what? I reset the dash clock and it's now actually keeping accurate time 24 hours after I charged the battery. Before, the clock would only work when the car was running and I thought, hell, the car is over 20 years old and things are bound to break. Looks like it was the ground all along..

Good to hear. Rarely hear good news around here. Nice and cheap fix too! I recently changed my signature line, which now says it all.

Don't forget the grounds at the engine. This is half of the path for your alternator charging.

Follow the ground strap you just cleaned to the back side of the engine/bellhousing.

Hi Hugh...the ground strap that I referenced is about 18" long and goes from the battery to a bolt on the firewall in the battery compartment...guess I should be looking for another ground strap...

Get a good flash light and look on the other (engine) side of the firewall. There is a ground strap(s) from the firewall to the back side of the engine/bellhousing.
