People say 944's are women's cars-why?

So, during my search for a 944 I've encountered people, Porsche people and regular car fans, who refer to the 944 as a woman's car. I don't get it. I have never thought of these cars that way. They also seem a little more involving to drive than most "lady's cars" I can think of. Anyway-anyone hear this before. Maybe I should look for an older 911, I don't want to be seen as unmanly. Kidding.

Well, I don't know. One dude even said "oh yeah, thats the car O.J.'s wife used to drive, a 944s, man dude, don't get one of those"... whatever. I've always thought of them as sort of a European Trans Am, but way cooler of course.

They just see a 2.5L engine and think small. They don't consider that the 944 weighs about 1000Lbs. less then their mustang and will be much easier to throw through a corner because of that.

Agreed. In some circles, the only number that matters is horsepower. No consideration is given to how much weight those ponies are pulling.

BRAVO!!!

Really, if you are that thin skinned maybe you should look for a 911.

Are you ready for...
It's not a REAL Porsche.
It's an AUDI (although with AUDI's racing record I never figured that to be a slam).
It's a VW.
What is the difference between a Porsche and a porcupine?
Etc.

I don't see a whole lot of 944s in my area, but when I do, many of them are driven by men. Aside from the headlights (which are like a Miata or something) there really isn't much that's feminine about the car. The ride is rough enough. The early interiors certainly don't pay much attention to detail, luxury, or feminine touches...just (unlit) mirrors in the sun visors.

never heard of it referred to as a girly car before. maybe a 911 fanatic will say something about it bieng water cooled, but the general public isn't familiar enough with P cars to know a 944 from a 928 or a 968... Boxster, Cayannes, and late model 911's, thats about the extent of their knowledge. In fact, when asked "what year is that?" my reply is "guess"... vast majority of the people reply between '96 and 2000. Heck, one time this girl (in all seriousness) said "nice ferrari"... lol

The farmer which lives down the street thought mine was a Ferrari also!

The 944 is the poor man's Porsche... or so I have been told.

My wife isn't tall enough to see over the dash without sitting on a pillow and a phone book, so it must be a "tall chicks" car.

Hmm not something I've ever heard anyone say maybe a Mx-5 or something but a 944? Think you should reconsider which 'people' you keep company with and find something a bit more interesting for your 10th post!

That's a reference to a 911 Porsche driver.

The Prick in in the inside.

Actually the Miata came years after the 924/944. Think there was just one or maybe two other sports cars in the middle 70's that had retracting headlights.

Every car has a stigma attached to it.

I have never heard the 944 refered to as a "woman's car," except in a magazine that described the 944S2 Cabriolet as "unfairly regarded as a secretary's car".

I think most people that consider the 944 to be a woman's car think in terms of HP only. In other words, to them, you are only a man if you drive some kind of a muscle car that cannot corner.

Whatever; they see us driving women's cars, we see them driving redneck cars.

These stigmas aren't necessarily true, but they're there.

The only ones I can think of that existed prior to the 944 are

Ferrari Daytona
Ferrari 512BB
Ferrari 308
Corvette Stingray/Sting Ray
Maseratis
Detomasos
Porsche 924
Porsche 928 (if you can consider those 'retracting')
Lambo Muira (same deal as 928)
Lotus Esprit
Triumph TR7

I'm sure I missed a couple, but these aren't exactly bad company to be in... I would not consider a Maserati Bora or a Ferrari BB a "woman's car"

My, my, proper English now...

What's the difference between a Porsche and a porcupine...
On a porcupine the pricks are on the outside.
