Stone Guard Decal
I'm looking in getting my car painted and I was wondering if those stone guard decals are really needed, I don't like them but if the paint gets chipped in a few weeks I would be pissed off not to have put them on.
Thanks for the feedback, Philippe

Have you had prices for the stonegaurd decals there? I tried to buy the scotchcal adhesive sheets from 3M here and they would not sell to the public. Have to go to the people that apply the stonegaurd, obviously with their big mark up. I have applied the clear adhesive on the nose cone of the car before, not too difficult, but it was not the correct stuff as the edges all started showing discoloured glue lines after a while. That area definately needs stone gaurd and the fender area behind the doors. I have the original stone gaurd there and it has cracked and discoloured so needs replacing.

I have a set that I bought for repainting my 'S', then it caught on fire. Now I have a freshly painted 951.
I paid $70 for whole the set, and I'd be more than happy to sell them to break-even.

Paul you can find those decals in the Pelican catalog. But my question is really if I don't install the decals after my paint job will it last a while or will it get chipped in no time?
Philippe.

it only takes 1 rock to make a chip...
after spending hard earned cash on a nice paint job - wouldn't you want to protect it?

I agree that it only takes one rock to chip the paint but with the aerodynamic flow of the car sometimes the air just trow rock on some parts of some cars. For example if my Jetta is dirty all around there are 2 or 3 spots that are a lot cleaner just because of aerodynamics, and if my car is clean some spots get dirty very quick. I was just wondering if putting these ugly decals would really help keeping the paint nice or if they are just there as a precaution.
The hood seems a spot more exposed to paint chips and it doesn't have any protection thats why I think it might be a rock magnet from an aerodynamic stand point. Philippe. P.S. There might be no answers but to try it??

I find on my car, it's the nose... and in front of the rear tires. Because that piece jets out and becomes "fatter", going by your aerodynamic logic, it's a place that could very easily be pelted with stones...

Actually, properly cleaned, the decals take paint rather well. On mine, with the clearcoat, they look like new. And the paint job is now in its fouorth blistering AZ summer.

Thanks for the info everybody I think that I'm going to put them on and see the damage on them at the end of the summer. If there is significant damage I will keep them on, if there is no damage I will reevaluate.
Great feedback!!!! Philippe
