Angry Sunroof wont latch in the rear

The sunroof on my 89 works great in every respect except that the rear latches do not engage with the body in the closed position, allowing the roof to flop around in the back. At any bump or speed above 40mph, the sunroof lifts in the rear to let wind noise and moisture enter the passenger compartment. Looked up the troubleshooting points on Clark's and checked out the PET but could not find the part(s) that lock the rear of the sunroof down when in the closed position. NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NEXT -- HELP PLEASE !!!

if you are not the first owner of the vehicle i would bet that the sunroof gears had been replaced and the long worm cable that drives the gears is not positioned correctly, thus not letting the sunroof tighten down when closed....pretty easy fix. Just have to fiddle with the positioning to get it right. Just my .02

The motor runs smoothly up and down cycles no problems, and the roof fully extends and stops at the end of the up cycle without drama. I was intrigued by the "adjustment" comment, but not clear what I should be adjusting on the rear latch assembly to get it to hold at the conclusion of the down (closed sunroof) cycle.

FR,
I think I understand what you are getting at but the roof circuit is working perfectly. No reaction on the sunroof switch with the ignition off. The issue is either a bad adjustment to a previous fix (I am the 6th owner and the sunroof seal has been replaced in factory condition) or something is missing/worn that I need to check out.

FR - are you referring to the microswitch (944 613 127 00)?? The PET says there are two. Still not sure where I should be looking however. Is the MS located in the actual sunroof front (center) edge or in the main roof section?

The latched microswitch at the sunroof motor is either bad or mal-adjusted, allowing the lifting arms to retract fully rather than stopping at the proper point to leave the rear of the sunroof latched.

If the roof tilts up properly, you can jerry-rig for a while by watching the lifting arms and making sure that you let go of the button _immediately_ when the roof closes from the vented position rather than keeping it pushed and allowing the lifting arms to retract fully.

This definitely sounds to me like the microswitches on the motor assembly.

I have done a couple of these myself and if you're not too far from Federal Way (I see that your profile says Seattle) I'll be glad to take a look at it for you sometime either this weekend or next. Just drop me a PM or an E-mail.

Aaron

Fixed it!!! Made the adjustment on the tab that contacts the MS and the sunroof operates 100%. Thanks for all the great pointers.
