88 944 Turbo Power Steering Failure

I need a pointer. I was parallel parking today, and I noticed that at full turn the (I assume) power steering pump was a bit noisy. Only recently have I driven the 951. Before that she was sitting waiting for me to be able to afford her again for several years. I checked the PS canister and it looked a little low but still within the 2 lines.

After getting back into the car, I no longer had power steering. I picked up some ATF Dextron III and emptied the canister with a hand pump (made for bleeding things). I flushed it out, suctioned out as much fluid as I could, and with the car idle turned the wheel slowly left to right and back (lock to lock). I clean it up, put it back together and refilled it.

After repeating the lock-to-lock -> refill process a few times, it appeared to be fully bleed, but still no power steering.

At this point, what are the possible problems? What are the likely problems? Any help is appreciated!

Belts don't like to sit for a year or two with out going round the pullies a few times every week. Power steering belts AND timing belts. So replace them especially the timing and balance belts.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Good question. My increasingly useless Haynes manual doesn't even talk about the power steering belt. I'll have to get underneath the car to find out I assume. I'll post back when I find out.

SoCal, I just checked my records. I last had both the power steering belt AND the timing belt changed 11K ago in 1998. It now has 80K on it.

Should they both be replaced?

30,000 miles or around two to three years due to rubber rot.

Your comments about sitting for two years raises questions.

I've decided at this point that after 7 years driving the car will be pushing my luck as far as the timing and tension belts go. Therefore, the car is going to the mechanic after I get married in August.

SoCal convinced me to not push my luck. Since it will be at the mechanic anyway, I'll have them look at the power steering and report back once the problem has been identified and resolved. Thanks for all of your help, guys.
