Oil pressure warning light

My oil pressure gage is working properly (hasn't changed in its readings since it was replaced a couple of years ago), pegs at startup, goes down as the engine warms up, and reads about 2 at idle when fully warm, as rpms increase so does the indicated pressure. The main warning light and the corresponding oil pressure light come on now. They sort of flicker, and are not on constant either at speed or at idle. The dipstick indicates good oil level.

I assume:
#1 (but am not certain and am not driving the car) that at this point the gage is accurate and the warning light is unreliable.

#2 that the warning light and gage are actually separate systems.

#3 that the symptoms indicate a problem (ground/short) with the warning light system.

Any thoughts/criticisms about my assumptions, or hints on where to start looking to fix the problem?

I had a simlar problem with my 924S, a bit different from your car... but i traced it to low brake fluid level as a result of my clutch master and slave going.

My car was doing that. It turned out to be that the 2 wires going to the sending unit were all covered with steering fluid from a previous leak. I pulled off the boot and cleaned the wires and connectors and put the boot back on. I haven't seen it flicker since. This may or may not be the same thing but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

Dumas, you are correct. My previous issues with the sending unit wires alwasy resulted in the oil pressure gauge pegging. I didn't even consider that to be an option, but it was certainly the cause. Thanks.
