How hard to smog?price?

Thinking of purchsing a 1987 944 guards for 1500$$$ in perfect body and interior conditiong, but the guy says the valve stick on one cylinder until its warm. And the problem that he thinks is a valve goes away after about 10 min. Its just kinda like a lack of power. Is this a valve? Also if it is will it effect smog because as i understand this is gunna have to pass smog here in cali in order to re-register it in my name, also are these cars bad with smog or ok?

$1500 is a low price for an 87, how's the paint, interior, wheels/tires, does it blow any smoke when it starts or during acceleration.
where it sits are there any leaks.

how long ago the belts/waterpump were done.

let it run for 10 min and see if the clicking goes away.

get a ppi inspection, well worth the investment to evaluate the whole car and you'll know what it needs and if the guys lying about the valve, which he probably is.

if it won't run smoothly it probably won't pass emissions.SmileWavy

My 944 passes emmissions here in Washington with no cat. Proper mixture, clean spark. Of course, we don't have California's visual test.

The paint is glossy and nice, one spot with a chip, interior is perfect ne tears on the front seats and looks like no one ever sat in the back. The ac is nice and cold, there is no clicking noise, just a little loss of power for first 10 min or so, i drove when it wasnt warm, i kinda suprised the guy, and asked what he would take for the red porsche in his drive way.No oil on engine, its just that loss of power for first 10 min. Also the car passed smog back in febuary and hasnt really been driven much since then, he mainly drives his volvo. Any help with this is appreciated.

Ya i know that law i asked my dad about it , he knows all that stuff he is a traffic court commisionner, and i saw it on the dmv website, but i kinda want this car and the guys said previously that if i buy i smog, and i just dont want to piss him off throwing the law in his face, thats why im trying to find out if its a good deal to see if i should do the plan i previously presented.

For $1,500, something is _very wrong_ with the car somewhere.

As far as passing smog, I can give you the readings from my chipped '86 951 with 145,000 miles that I just had to have checked here in WA:

Idle:
HC: 11
CO: 0.00%
O2: 4.4%
RPM: 820

Cruise:
HC: 19
CO: 0.01%
O2: 3.8%
RPM: 2420
Gear: 2nd

Gas cap failed the pressure test but a $6 replacement from NAPA passed. The NAPA cap will only be used once every other year for smog though, otherwise I'm sticking with the stock locking cap.

Bear in mind that head work will be expensive. probably a couple grand with labor.

just to cya, tell him you are serious about buying and that you want to have a mechanic look at it first. have it towed if nessec to a shop that does emission testing , find out what its blowing and what it would take to pass. if you throw all caution to the wind though you will probably be ok though since the body is great shape , you like the car and low purchase price.
