It isn't so much as they are looked down upon as not being a Porsche - generaly speaking, they are severely underpowered, and due to their age, the costs involved in bringing the car back up to standard usually far exceed what the car is worth.

Even 944s are looked down on by some, and even compared to that, the 924 is noisy, shakey, and slow.

924 begat 931; and 944 which begat 951; and 968 etc...so to look down on the 924 is like looking down on your siblings or your parents or your grandparents depending on what you drive ! only fools would do such a thing.

The biggest issue with the 924 reputation is there are not enough nice ones to bring it respect. Even at the Porsche gatherings the ones there are not as well kept for the most part.

They were great fun little cars and people drove the piss out of them when they were new. Then put them out to pasture after 125,000 miles because they all need to be rebuilt around that time, give or take.

It takes a special person to recognize the potential and the value in the initial design, and a miracle worker to make it perform up to the standard set by the handling.

It should'nt.

You can have a nice little 924 street sleeper for around $5000 if you can work on it yourself, and they are basic simple cars (with a little bit of Porsche over-engineering). But beware that you are way better off getting one as a project car that you plan on restoring rather than a running project. Then you have 100,000+ miles to enjoy it once you are done.

Making them fast is a matter of money just like any other car, and knowing people that are successfully doing it. But everything has it's limits.

As for value...my cars are valuable to me because I make them that way. Then again they are as far from stock as possible given the lack of support. Whether or not they command big money on the auction block is another story.

That's a nice start.

Are those fuchs or phone dials on there?

I can tell you this much... they are fun to drive, and yes a bit underpowered but you can always check into things like this turbo kit that I have. It will give the end user 931 performance levels at least. That makes the car straight up quick for what it is.

Light, nimble, and if you can get 145 hp to it, quick. Down right fast at 210+.

Looks a nice car! I'de say buy it and enjoy it.
I've just sold mine this week but only so that i can go get myself a nicer example to use about town.
People shouldn't knock them - they're cheap and easy to maintain and a lot of fun - the one i've just sold hadn't been on the road since a year last march but she passed the m.o.t. only needing work to the brakes - not bad for a 23 year old motor. It's a personal thing but i like them - a good clean, looked after example (preferably with a good interior) can still turn heads 'cause it's got the badge on the front.

how cheap (or should i say expensive?) are the parts for the 924 and are they easier to work on than the 44? i know the cost for parts and labor on the 24S is what killed me (not to mention my "custom" dent).

924's and 944's are looked down upon because most of their owners are complete morons and do not take care of their cars, and let them turn into total cobbled-together worthless pieces of garbage.

Of course, no one here fits that description so we all are OK.

That's a very clean example of a 924. It's not so much that they're bad cars, it's that most of the people who owned them drove them into the ground. Parts for a 931 are super-hard to get now unless you come across someone with two -> one to drive, one as a parts car.

Really, I dont think its the car so much as the guy in the drivers seat that brings the car down a few levels.....
