Where to locate hood water diverter
Sorry for the vagueness, but I'm looking at a 1980 924. Its only major
problem is that it is missing the plastic part that goes between the hood and the windshield, just under the hood, that diverts water away from the engine bay. This apparently flooded the battery and caused a large leak in the passenger compartment, along with a lot of mold. I don't see anything resembling it on the PP catalog, and the 944 body diagrams on *********** don't have it. Do you know what I'm talking about, if so, could you tell me the part number and an estimated price for it? Thank you very much. |

There are two drains in the front battery, blower area. These get plugged with leaves and twigs and don't drain. The pastic has nothing to do with keeping the water out but rather off of the wiper arms and motor.
The reason there is a hole under the battery is because the battery sweats and even with the drains working correctly, this area will corrode and rust through. A proper repair with sheet metal and rubberized underbody coating is the usual. Wouldn't want to try to braze anything because of the chance of catching the car on fire.

I don't believe there is a plastic water diverter on the 80 924. Only a cover over the windshied wiper motor and the little R2D2 looking cover for the fresh air intake. Both bays left and right (battery box on the passenger side) are open to water and have drains, as mentioned in previous post. Be sure the drains are open.
The 944 has a plastic water diverter or shield that covers more but it won't fit the 924 because of the profile of the fresh air intake. I suppose you could try to modify one to fit but I've got one in my garage and, when I tried to fit it onto an 80 924, it looked like a lot of cutting would have to be done and then the effects would be marginal as far as diverting the water. You might be able to buy some thin rigid plastic like styrene used for vacuforming and mold a new piece that would divert the water for you. In the mean time, you can remove the battery, clean out both areas on either side of the fresh air cabin intake and seal the holes. Or cut out the rusted metal and have a new piece welded in. Lots of ways to fix it. PM me if you need more info. |
