Check the cv joints on the axle shafts - re-pack with grease.

Need a little more information.
Where is the clunk coming from? behind the engine, from the rear? and when does it clunk - only when shifting?, when you apply power? These cars do not have U-joints. They do have a torque tube - essentially a long driveshaft supported by bearings. If one of the bearings is going bad, the car will make a moderate howling noise under load - particularly at certain RPM. Eliminate the wheel bearings as a source first. Then change your transmission fluid and check the fluid - some silvery power (chaff) is normal. Little chunks of metal are bad. If all of that checks out - it is probably your torque tube - if you can live with the noise, I would suggest doing so. You can pick them up used fairly inexpensively. New, the cost is extremely prohibitive (over $1000 USD). Replacing a torque tube is very labor intensive. Good Luck AFJuvat |
Other problem with the torque tube is it's proximity to the exhaust and the cat. converter. The heat really is hard on the bearings.
The noise sounds more like CV joints, likely on an older 924 since they usually get ignored by the po. |
