944 (n/a) spark problems

I picked up an 84 and got it home this past weekend.
The car had been sitting for about a year.
It was parked because of an over heating problem the previous owner didn't want to deal with. It turns out the fans did not come on when he went out to start it.
It ran great before he parked it.
So I got it home, replaced the battery with the correct Bosch (wow expensive!!!).
But it won't start, so I am thinking I will need to replace the fuel system and drop the tank and have it cleaned and coated.
But I check for spark at the dist. and got nothing.
So before I think about dealing with the fuel system, I need spark.
What's my next move? I am new to this.
