83 944 Valve Replacement Est.

I was wondering what an estimated price on getting an exhaust valve replaced on a 83 944 n/a porsche would be. I realize there is chance my piston may be damaged or the valve may have scratched up the inside of the cylinder, but without that being, how much would just replacing a valve be if I were to say, take it to a shop? I am of course a kid, only 18, and not a real mechanic myself. If anyone has had their valves replaced due to a belt break, or knows anyone around the bay area of sacramento in california, please let me know an estimated price. Thanks.

About $500 in parts. Maybe less depending on how many are bent. An automotive machine shop would want to replace the guides too if they did the work. Might be able to keep it on the cheap if the guides are not worn too much. Depending on the milage and the contition of the valve seats you may be able to just lap the new valves in and for go the valve grind.

You will want to do the labor. Pull and reinstall the head. Not that difficult with the proper selection of tools.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

After you pull the head and assess damages on the lower end you might find that it'll be easier and more cost effective to buy a good used NA head.

The valves are cheap, look up SI valves on line maybe $20 each. Getting the head off is takes me about an hour. Bringing the head to a shop to replace broken valve (if its just replacing one valve) is nothing maybe 45 minoutes. Then reassemble. Buy a manual for $12 and do it yourself.

If you take it to a shop, your gonna pay big time for it all. If you do the work yourself, like others have said, you can save at least that big part of it. If your needing to replace a valve because of a timing belt failure, then be ready for more than one valve to be replaced. Head gasket kits are about $100.00 or little more, gaskets individually are about half that or so. Valves cost about $25.00 $30.00 each. You should have a "competent" machine shop look this head over, and check it out against all specifications, THEN decide what to do. Other issues/problems with this head may only come to light then. This job is not a real big deal, but is big enough, you really want to think twice about cheaping out any more than you really have to. Belts/rollers/seals, all must be considered when getting into something like this also. One step at a time. Take head off, look, get machine shop's recomendation, and go from there. Good luck. STILL much cheaper, if you do the labor end of it yourself. Good luck!
