"Easier" Clutch replacement proceedure?
I did the clutch on my (dead) 924. In a driveway/parking stall, I could replace the clutch on my 944 in an easier way by...
Disconnect exhaust. Disconnect shift linkange on trans. Undo torque tube coupling at trans. Unbolt trans from the body and torque tube, drop it down, out and under the car. Unbolt torque tube from bellhousing, slide it back as far as possible with trans out of the car. Unbolt bellhousing from engine. Replace clutch cover & clutch disc and pilot bearing. Reassemble. Estimation of hours? I think in the neighborhood of 20 by myself. 10-12 with an assistant. |
Make sure to have all the correct tools including the cheese head AKA triple square. Beware of those nasty nasty speed and reference sensors near the top of the bellhousing. Those can consume hours in themselfs trying to get them out without breaking them. 20 hours is about right if everything goes well. The top 2 torque tube to bellhousing bolts can also be a PIA.

Things that will give you grief and things to keep in the back of your mind.
1. The pivot for the clutch fork. Nasty. But there is more than one way to skin that cat. 2. Upper bellhousing bolt. Think universal swivels and extensions. 3. The tranny coupler (if you go and unbolt the tranny from the tranny bellhousing BEFORE you undo the coupler. Not good) 4. Try not to strip anything. Make sure the bolts are clean and wrenches/sockets are seated nicely before putting any force on them. |
Roger that... forgot about the sensors... So used to these infernal Type IV's without them...
