starting problem
I think my 89 944NA has a fuel pump relay problem. It seems that when the tank gets low on gas say 1/4 tank or less it will crank but not start. If I keep at it the engine will start but I haver to turn the key off and try it again until it starts. Anyone had a problem like this??

listen for the fuel pump when you try to start it and it doesn't crank. when you relize that it's not going to start right up, let off the key and just bump the starter, your pump should run for about 3 seconds. i don't know what the fuel level in the tank would have to do with it. you may have a relay going and the fuel level is just a coinsidence.

sludge in the gas tank?
has your car been sitting for a while? or has it ever sat for an extended period of time? |
thats a thought, have you changed your fuel filter? or better yet checked your fuel presure.

No the car hasn't been sitting. I also notice that the fuel gauge doesn't move at all for a few seconds then it bumps up all of a sudden. It runs fine except once in awhile it does this. It seems to do this after it sits for a few days. Ive got two other Porsches that I drive plus my Chevy truck so I rotate on the cars every few days.

AND I dont think I hear the fuel pump.AS I also have another 944 that I dont drive any more so I know what to listen for.

i've had broken solder joints on the back of the temp/fuel gauge that made the needles jump around.
