retarding my timing at the dme

i just took the DME apart and didn't find anything burnt. the chip looks like the stock one. i did adjust the timing, using FRWilk's web page, http://frwilk.com/944dme/of.htm . i set the timing back using setting 4, leaving the mixture the same.

i've been having problems with the car cutting out under hard acceleration, and i wonder if setting it back will cure this. also, it failed NOx emissions, retarding the timing should help. ALSO, about a third of the gas in the car is at least a year old, so i think that is the real problem. after i get it tested again, i'll have a better idea what is going on...

where on Wilk's website does it discuss adjusting the timing and the mixture from the DME? I can't seem to find the page.

look for fuel quality switch, top left of the page.

not sure this accomplished anything. it did cut out again, but not nearly as severe as before. accelerations seems a bit smoother, but that could just be my foot...

If you think its a fuel quality issue.........

You could always throw in a gallon of xylene.....until you completely burn it off.

Now when you say cuts out. What have you checked up to this point ?

my car runs a little on the rich side. Anybody have any info on how to lean it a little using this switch (Wilk?)

i've checked vacuum hoses, opened the DME to make sure nothing is burnt, cleaned all the electrical connections under the hood that i could find (including connectors at the injectors), verified BOV is not shot, there are two bottles of injector cleaner in the fuel. i am starting to think the wastegate might be stuck or something. it seems to hit full boost, about 1.6 BAR according to my gauge and the car just shudders and i hear a loud pop from the back, like a backfire. scared the shiznit out of my wife the other day.

be assured that i am not being critical, please educate me: why would the cat cause this?

also, i noticed a 'catalytic converter gong' with the other relays... what the hell is that?

Try here, think its what you're looking for:

CJ for your rich problem I would look at the temp sender for the dme first.

The Fqs switches really should not be played around with unless you are in an area with low quality fuel.

Aftermarket chips take advantage of the Fqs positions as well...but thats a whole other story.

Nynor did pulling timing back help ?

nynor 10-05-2005 02:45 PM

it seemed to help a bit. on acceleration, especially from a stop, it would kind of pause a few times. it seems to accelerate smoother now. also, when it cut out today, it didn't seem quite so severe.

i am thinking it is the fuel or i have a bad wastegate/vacuum leak. i need to get under the car and check out all the lines there. the PO claims the engine has been rebuilt, barely has 300 miles on it now and that all those lines were replaced.

CJ, if you a running a Power Prom 2 you are gonna run a little rich no big deal and nothing will get hurt, the chip is setup to be that way. If you gotta pass smog just switch back to normal mode
