Good thing a 924 is easy to push
 

I just picked up my new $650 '88 924S from the mechanic. Of couse it is now a $2000 924S. Still a good deal considering the condition. What I had done to bring it up to snuff was:

New Belts (all)
New PS pump
tune up
new front wheel bearings
Repaired damaged radiator(same bump that got the ps pump)
Two new (rebuilt) axels and CVs

Here is the problem. On the way home with it I'm just cruseing along in 4th about 45 mph I felt a jump in the gear shift then the car went into permanent neutral. I was on a busy parkway at rush hour. Why is it that if you are driving a Yugo people will stop to help you push but if you are driving a Porsche that just honk and flip you the bird?

The gearbox won't engage in any gear. The clutch petal still feels normal. Before it went out I did notice a vibration that got worse as the RPMs went up but just thought it was the new CVs.

Any thoughts as to what this is. I won't be able to get the mechanic that worked on it until Monday and would like to have some Ideas before I go so he doesn't jerk me around. Could this be caused buy the new axles he installed, if so how?

I don't think it is the shift linkage. The shifter feels the same as it did before. I can feel and hear the linkage engaging.

Given I know nothing about a manual P-gearbox, the behavior is like the shaft from the engine is not connected, or God forbid, the splines stripped. While the mechanic had it up on the rack he inspected the clutch and said it looked fine. A new clutch was put in in '95.

Is it possible that you still have the original rubber center clutch disc and you just ripped the crap out of it? May just need a new clutch disc to get back on the road. Of course that's a PITA job on a 944...

No, the clutch is not orginal. It was replaced in '95. I don't know however if it was replaced with another rubber donut or a new design.

Wouldn't I feel that in the clutch petel if the clutch broke?

No, the pedal wouldn't feel any different if the center of the clutch disc ripped out. In fact it would be exactly as if the "splines stripped out" as you described the problem. Now if it were something with the pressure plate then yes the pedal would feel different.

Thanks all for the advice. After looking around and playing with the shifter I feel pretty sure I frapped a clutch.

I guess that just goes to prove there is no such thing as a $650 Porsche.
