car runs in 'safe mode' when cold

i've posted this elsewhere and pretty much received no response, so here goes:

my car wants to run in safe mode when its cold. i drive to work in the morning, the car is in safe mode, runs horribly, etc. as soon as it is warmed up, if i turn the car off, even for just a second, and restart it, it runs fine.

any suggestions?

safe mode????

yep. if your KLR senses detonation, among other things, it goes into safe mode and only allows 1.2 BAR of boost. basicall, the car has very little power because the wastegate is opening and not letting any pressure to build.

anycase until my 951 be cold I don't attempt to run it over 2600 - 2800 rpm ..

but good to know about safe mode ..

Uhmmmm can you verify this is what happening with the codes on the test plug.

Normally when you shut the car off and restarts the KLR gets out of this mode.

Not the other way around.

If this is whats happening ...........TIS weird.

You should at least get a faulty KLR code.......... or the knock sensor could be out of whack.

well, for whatever reason, it goes into safe mode when it is cold. i drive it til it is warm, restart itand its fine.

this morning, i let the car idle til it was at operating temp. no problems.

about safe mode...

Does your "Fasten Seatbelt" light flash when your car goes into safe mode?

I drive a 1983 944 and I've experienced something that robs my engine of power and causes the "Fasten Seatbelt" light to flash. There are even times where the engine cuts off completely (turns off) and somehow starts up again (I think it push starts itself although I've read that you can't do that with a 944). Sometimes the car will be running fine, like when I'm in the middle of driving down the highway, and then all of a sudden that light will start flashing and my car loses a lot of power. Sometimes it'll act that way from the moment the car is started up.

The only way I've been able to get it to act normal again is by turning off the engine and turning it back on, but even then it doesn't always solve the issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i think you have a grounding issue that is causing your car to think it is just being started and is also probably interrupting current to your computer/ignition/coil/fuel injection systems.

Thanks

Thanks nynor, uhm...should I start by cleaning off some of my ground wires or should I take it to a shop and ask them to check over the electrical?

Eldorado 10-23-2005 09:27 PM

start by cleaning the grounds - that's free.
also clean the connections on your battery... and maybe even pull your instrument cluster to see if there are any bare wires back there...

check your fuses - see if they're all intact and seated properly.

you CAN push start a 944.. i did it for a month and a half before fixing my ignition switch. forwards AND backwards...

Thanks Eldorado,
I'll try that out and see how it turns out. And useful bit of information about push starting the car.
