My two biggest problems. Help?

I cant solve these two problems.

1. Smell of Gas in my car. I can't get rid of the gas smell espically when i have a full tank. I have duct taped the crap out of that fuel pump cover in the trunk, but still STINKY. I checked to see if the lines a messed up inide the filler hose cover behind the passenger side back seat. Still nothing. Someone told me that its the rear hatch seal.... but it really smells like gas not like exhaust fumes? or are they almost identical. this is killing me.... i think literally.

2. Cold start shutter. If its too cold it can barely start and it shutters for a few seconds until it warms up. Then it runs smooth. But it really struggles on cold startups. I have tried the stock map and frwilks map (i have a switch) but both do the same thing. Any ideas?

Sounds like a cold start enrichment issue. Try replacing the DME Temp Sensor II. Its the sensor at the front of the block with the BLUE connector. The DME "reads" this sensor to get coolant temperature, and then uses coolant temperature to "tweak" the fuel/air ratio for cold start enrichment.

I had similar problems that were corrected by replacing the O2 sensor. It turned out the sensor wasnt even hooked up (it was also bad) and the engine was just gessing how much gas to send in which was way too much.

Also check all your vacuum lines. Mine did this till I changes them.

Britwrench 11-09-2005 05:37 PM

O2 sensor does not affect cold start

ilikemy944 11-09-2005 06:32 PM

FR's chip also doesn't use the 02 sensor.

I have *heard* that the drain for the fuel overflow uses the same tubing that the drains for the sunroof use. So if they are blocked, the fumes can get in the cabin that way... Don't really have any more info than that, but it may be something worth looking into.

I think the fumes may be coming from a leak in the fuel fume canister. I am gonna check that outl

nynor 11-09-2005 08:56 PM

mine was missing the canister entirely. it stunk very bad if i filled the tank to the top.

I have the same cold start problems .. and I thought is the gas pump check valve ..

You mean the charcoal canister?

Mine's been removed and I don't have any fuel smell issues. Also, the charcoal canister is located in the driver's side front fender, so even if it's gone, the scent wouldn't come from the rear.

I took the fume canister off mine also and just ran the hose into the interior. This way I can drive and huff gas at the same time, saving me precious minutes on my way to work in the morning.

Appreciate the "wankers" comment. I'll remember to rachet down my level of respect and the nice-ness of my responses to your posts in the future.

Let's put it this way, if I'd called you a "dip*****" in my initial post, how much "fun and games" would it have been to you?

And "dip*****" is not on the same level of calling someone a "wanker" since the former doesn't imply sexual self-gratification while the latter does. Vulgarity may be quite funny in High School, but when you get out in the real world you'll find that it doesn't get you very far.

It's a simple matter of speaking respectfully. You chose not to and by so doing gave me no good reason to speak respectfully back.

AaronM sorry I'm a 29 years old Porsche owner .. and is not my intention present excuses for other persons .. but here we stay in totally impersonal but very functional communication method ..

Maybe my poor English do not permit express my ideas correctly, but is my intention say, don't share the same down level.

Share and " tech " better up level to all other persons that don't know this one ..

You are a great teacher in Porsche issues .. I'm 226% sure also you are a great live style teacher. :D

Time out AaronM, cchyper never said you were a wanker, he just said that all the people that were in disbelief about the fume canister were wankers. Did it ever cross your mind that he may have received a pm or a personal email from more people than we see here?

cchyper 11-15-2005 06:55 PM

HEY YOU!

First of all, you must know that wanker is used in the lightest way possible. I can not believe you would take so much offense and assume such disrespect on a board of this stature. If this was a honda board, i would expect to see posts like your quarrel using a term like "dip*****." Who do you think you are? 1477 posts, does that make you the pelican social more officer? I suggest that you please take the next comment in a lighter manner and respond in an equally light hearted way. We are all big boys now I would think that problems like these would be avoided.

Wikipedia on "Wanker"
“As with the word "jerk", the level of insult is entirely dependant upon the situation, The use of the word "wanker", jovially delivered amongst friends is seen as a friendly practice in the United Kingdom. However, the use of the word in a heated or agressive situation such as a Football Match, or similar, can lead to much more serious consequences, such as Fights or Brawls. The term "wanker" was not considered profane in the United States because it is rarely used in this sense, and is a genuine (though rare) surname.

In the American sitcom Married... with Children, the character Peggy's maiden name was Wanker. Al Bundy's in-laws were therefore "the Wankers". This has been attributed to one of the scriptwriters of Married... with Children being English. An episode of Mork & Mindy also included a character called Arnold Wanker. Although it is now infrequently used in American broadcasting due to the increased awareness of "wanking" as a term for masturbation in the United States in the 2000s, it is still possible to walk into a delicatessen in many parts of the United States and buy a bottled beer named 'Wanker'.”

I consider us all friends, at least fellow Porsche enthusiasts that can enjoy a good laugh. Last time I checked this forum wasn’t competitive sport. Don’t be so quick to draw.

And if you have ever seen a Top Gear episode, "wanker" is used quite frequently. It also makes me laugh, so next time you see me type wanker; say it outloud with an british accent and it may sound a bit better and more halarious.
