Fuel Pump Groan
I recently purchased a '90 S2 (my first water cooled Porsche), I've noticed a "groaning" noise from the fuel pump area at low speeds, it doesn't happen always and it usually goes away after the rpm's get up over 2500 or so.
From what I've been able to gather I believe it might be related to the FPR or maybe a fuel pressure damper. but before I start throwing money at it I thought I'd ask for a second opinion and see if anyone has had a similar experience. Thanks, Dog |

Same thing happened to me,
kind of an irregular groan which would build up and then pass into silence, then start again... turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator - the diaphragm inside the regulator had busted. Drove with this sound for a day or so, parked and it wouldn't start. After turning over for a while, popped the hood and fuel was spurting out of the vacuum connection to the regulator... made for a scary few moments. Fuel was sucked into the manifold and pooled in my intercooler pipes, etc. New regulator and problems went away.

Definitely FPR when mine was groaning. Check the fuel pressure to be sure - mine was way high.

was checking the oil this weekend, and even tho it looked fine I decided to push on the vacuum line attached to the FPR, it actually went on quite a ways.
and so far the groan has almost gone away, still get it a little bit but a lot quieter. should have my new FPR tom. debating whether or not I really need it. Might just go ahead and replace it. 15 year old car, 109k miles, can't hurt.
