how can i tell if i have it without burning off my tires

lift up the back end... manually turn the wheels with your hands.. if one wheel spins one way, and the other spins the other way - you've got it....

i believe so anyway.. lol

Thats how you know that you have an open diff. An LSD will make both wheels spin the same direction if you spin spin just one.
