Strange Chirping noise...
 

Hello Everyone.

Today I warmed up my very frosted over car and drove it to work. I get half way to work and I start hearing a chirping noise from my driver side back tire. Very randomly. At first it sounded like a little baby bird or something was back there but then it starts getting more frequent and starts to sound like an alarm. Anyone know what this is? I pulled over and it stopped. I checked for rodents and the brakes look fine.
It only happens when the car is moving and gets louder the faster and more I drive. I am thinking it's because the car was frozen? Maybe frozen brake fluid?

Wierd. It went away after putting gas in my car.
Maybe some sort of low gas notification?

Your rear outer axle bearing has siezed and the inner race is tuning on the stub axle. It chirps because it's most likely cracked and dry.

the exact same thing happened to me.
I kept driving it, and now I'm in for a new stub axle, hub, and everything from the bearing inner race to the outer race (both bearings, seals, o-rings, etc)....

stop driving, take the wheel apart (or your car to a mechanic) and find out exactly what's going on... before you get in over your head like me.

The noise went away after my car warmed up. It was some how related to it being extremely cold and frosted over.

i have the same problem too. mine chirrps too and sends the tires up in smoke!

Mine hasn't done it since. It was related somehow to the extreme cold.

What year is your car? Please add this to the signiture line so we don't have to guess.

If you have an early 944 or a 924S I would be worried about the rear axles. The seals get worn fast and let water into the bearings. Then the wear really begins. Happens to the later rear stub axles too. But not nearly as often.

I would check to see if the brake pads are wearing evenly. Sometimes the carrior will hang up and twist causing the pads to wear into a wedge shape.

Ah, yes. I believe that's it. When I took the car into the shop they looked at the brakes and told me that the previous owner did a patch job to sell the car. He had replaced the brakes himself and one of them was worn into a wedge shape like you described. The breaks squeek contstantly. Hopefully one day I'll be able to afford a simple set of brake pads.

Take the existing pads out and use a belt sander to reshape them. If you don't you are asking for lots of problems such as having the breaks lock up unexpectedly.

Yes, good point. I would rather buy new set of pads though instead of buying a belt sander.
