Engine stand what kind to use, Weight of 944 engine?
Currently the spare motor is on an old used tire just laying in the garage. It's time to rebuild it but I need an engine stand Does anyone have any out there that they recomend. Do i need a special adaptor?.
What is the weight of the 944 engine? I've found a few engine stand's at my local hardware store but they have different weights 1st one is a 750lb http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=32915 2nd is a 1000lb http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=32916 3rd is a 2000 lb http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=4420 Or this guy, space saver http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=47304 Any sugestions or recomendations would be apreciated Merry x-mas to all :) |
I used a 750lb engine stand, had a turbo engine complete with crossmember, turbo, intake, crossover pipe, etc on it. I think that's about as heavy as they get.

Bearing in mind that my ZZR1100 was about 500lbs, I would think it would be no more than this?
However, the stands you are looking at are cheap, So, I'd buy the 1000lbs one due to it having four wheels and it will be far safer. 911 engines average around 200kg 450lbs. Get the 1000 and be done with! $54.99 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
I was thinking the 4 wheeler as well looked like it woudl be easier to move and stay more stable.
well if a 911 engien is about 450 6cyl corect me if im wrong then my lil 4 cylinder should be that weight at most with alternator A/C Exaust headers. well come monday morning gunna get that 1k pounder stand and throw it on back of the old 44 and away we go ( slow and steady ) Thank's again guys for posting on yer x-mass day :) ( I had nothing else better to do but talk p-cars anyways) Regards Jaime |
I got the 1,000-pound one with a 4-wheel "H" configuration for the bottom. I don't trust those 3-wheel "Y" ones - way too easy to tip over. Remember once loaded the engine stand has a center of gravity much like any SUV - about 12" from the top. As such, it doesn't take much for one to tip over and send your engine crashing to the ground (and possibly busting your foot/leg in the process) when you're rolling it.

I dropped one on my big toe, and I must reccomend avoiding that experience if you can. If you're going to be working on the engine on the stand, more stable is money well spent.

I have both the 750lb, and the 1klb stands. I have a complete engine on the 1k stand right now. I don't recommend the 750lb one. Its much to unstable and tippy. I don't use this one at all anymore. You can get away just fine with the 1k lb one. I got mine for less than that advertised price, as these go on "sale" frequently. I like the heck out of the others, but, I was to cheap to go after one of those. So.........go for anything but the first one, depending on what ya want to spend for one.

the engine is approx really ****** heavy. I thought I could do sort of a squat lift on mine, and its just the short block. I am a big guy (210lbs) and I had to think again. Ended up tipping it over onto a skateboard that I didnt like to move it. I think its atleast 400lbs.

Buy the heaviest capacity you can afford. dont skimp just to save a few bucks. I build alot of big block chevys and have had stands fail.
STAY AWAY from the 3 wheel jobs. unless you get a high quality one, such as a Blackhawk. Those harbor frieght stand are not bad for a 944 engine, I have 3 of them that I use to hold V-8 engines. My good stands are Blackhawk and ones I built myself out of heavy guage steel tubing. All are 4 wheel stands. |
