New Tranny...Lube Recommendations (Cross Post)

I wasted my 3rd gear on the track last month in my 86 Turbo. I've been waiting for that. It had the non LSD with cooler (016R 5P). I always promised myself when it went that it was going to be replaced by a Turbo S (016R AOR) tranny.

Guess what I got? Found one from an 88 Turbo S street car with 81K miles that had the infamous fuel rail fire. I am cleaning it up and am going to change the gear lube while it's out of the car.

Questions:

I'm thinking of cracking it to check it out. What would you do?

I have always used Red Line but am hearing that Mobil 1 gear lube is better. Thoughts?

-g

I had a mystery fluid when i bought my car, switched to Redline and it mostly cured (not completley) my 2nd gear grind due to a worn synchro.

Some people swear by Swepco, you may consider them. In the event i ever decide to change my tranny fluid again i will try that. I ended up getting the Redline because it was available locally and had heard of sucesses with relieving the symptoms of worn synchros. It did it for the most part, however id like to see if Swepco is any better.

Good call changing the fluid while you have the tranny out of the car. Its a pain in the butt to refill it with it still in. It took some coaxing (and alot of time) using my nitro r/c fuel bottle. Which has a long aluminum neck that i managed to squeeze into the space upside down. Just the oil is thick as hell and takes forever to squeeze out!

Personally, I would NOT think Mobil-1 is better than Red Line. I have no experience with Red Line, but I have a lot of experience with Amsoil Gear Lube and it's all good. I view Red Line as an almost equal to Amsoil, perhaps even better, but Mobil-1 for one won't match the GL rating of Amsoil (that rating that has to do with corrosion of yellow metal when the oil gets hot). As for virtually all of the Amsoil tests, it appears they go to EXTREMES to produce a superb product, where-as Mobil is geared for the quantity of production, selling at WallMart, etc. which is fine, but sometimes the boutique shops do, indeed, produce a better albeit more expensive product. Check this link, maybe there's something there of use to you,

I recently put in AGIP synthetic in my 944s2 and the gearbox feels great.

I work for Porsche (not a mechanic) and as such i get my car looked after pretty well. I told my mechanic i wanted redline put in there when the clutch was getting changed but he insisted that i go with AGIP instead - so i took his advice and its been great so far.
Although he did say that redline is definately a good product but in his experience AGIP has come out on top.

Choice is yours but i think if it were mobil vs redline.... I'd go redline all the way.

aggerz.

I'm a Swepco supporter myself. The bottom line is that there's plenty of great lubricants out there these days, but I can only speak from personal experience.

When I first bought my car, I dragged my feet to change the tranny fluid for about 6 months. When in neutral, it had a distinct "rumble" that sounded like a bad throw out bearing. Changed with Swepco and viola! The rumble was 95% gone, and the shift action was considerably smoother - even in the bitter cold. (No, I don't work for or sell Swepco products)

Well, finally got the tranny in last night. Here are some pix of the completed work. I'm gonna take it out tomorrow if the weather permits to see how it is.

That is actually a used Turbo S tranny with 81K. It's amazing what 12 Budweisers, a pack of Marlboros, and a die grinder with a wire wheel will do on a Friday night!

I did check with the dealer for s&g's on a new Turbo S tranny - $6K and they can still order them from Germany! If I coud've afforded it, I would have done it in a second.

I was using amsoil, then I switched to redline because it was available locally....I am currently using Swepco, and i have to say it is the better of the three in my experience....
