Towing Question

Hi,

So I've finally located a 1982 Porsche 924 Turbo to replace my 78' 924. The only problem is that the car has been sitting for 4 years and doesn't run in its current condition.

The car is located 400 miles away from where I want it to be, so I need to figure out a way to get it there.

I'm buying the car for 500 dollars so I'd like a low-cost option (>500) of either towing or shipping the car. I was considering renting a Uhaul to tow the car but 400 miles and a big truck won't be cheap with gas these days. Are there any companys that would be able to do this? By the way, the car weighs around 2700lbs so its not that heavy.

Thanks.

You might look in the yellow pages for a towing company. If you're lucky, they might be going that way and coming back empty, so they might cut you a deal.

I have a tow truck, and an 800 mile round trip would cost me $300 in fuel, and I would charge you an additional $400 for my time.

Friend with a V8 Explorer or other SUV with a V8 engine, body on frame construction, and a Class V hitch and a U-Haul flatbed trailer.

Even with gas that should be under $500.

Well, if you have a friend, it's another story...

Of course, if you want a friend, buy a truck. If you want a lot of friends, buy a tow truck. ;-)

I'm in SoCal, so unless your willing to drive here to tow the car your offer probably isn't good.

How about transporting the car by train?

buy a cheap universal tow bar off ebay. any of those ones with the flat bumper brackets. They all start at $9.99.

Remove the front bumper. Rotate the bumper shocks. Use a long bolt to go through the ends od the tow bar and holes in bumper shocks.

I towed my 944S twice this way. No mods, no drilling, no cutting, no hassle. Takes 5 min to pull bumper on 944 and attach towbar.

thought about renting a big gruck to do the towing for you?

as stupid as it sounds, you might even be able to transport your 944 in a cube van you can rent from any local mover... just keep in mind weight capacities.
