When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Could me the circuit board - mine has a short or break in the 'wire' that goes to the dash lights. I have a replacement board, but haven't installed it yet...

Could also be the light dimmer switch, but it's best to get a voltmeter and start checking the wires. I would start with the dimmer switch and if I have power there, you should be able to see the color of wire leaving the switch and see if it doesn't run directly over to the instrument cluster. Hope this helps

Its an 84. Well like I said the lights in the dash dont come on but the headlights still come up and turn on if this narrows it down any... so looks like I'll bust out the old voltmeter

the headlights use a different power source than the dash lights. check your running lights and your tag light.

The reostat on the side of the headlight switch may be broken. Might be able to clean it with a shot of electrical contact cleaner as you move the wheel up and down.
