Brake Problem

I just replaced front and rear brake pads and changed the brake fluid using a power bleeder. the problem is now the brake pedal travels to low before the brakes engage. It's a litle freaky. What's the deal?

Eldorado 03-25-2006 10:35 PM

i suppose you didn't bleed properly and there's air in the system...
could be other things.. i'd wait for others to come give you their opinion.. hehe

bled left rear, rigt rear, right front left front. As most things I do that don't work out right....it is very annoying.

Been here a while know the feeling.

Anyway, Just re-bled rears and same thing is happening.

Does the pedal pump up and stay solid? Enough brake fluid in the system? All the bleed valves tight? Leaking piston seals?

Jeeper31 03-26-2006 06:46 AM

All bleeder valves are tight. The pedal does pump up and stay solid and the level of the fluid s full.

Jeeper31 03-26-2006 03:09 PM

RE-bled everything with someone pumping pedal. There are some tiny bubbles that i see from the right front. Brakes still dont' feel right.

If they pump up though, it usually means there is still air in there.

lmao are you serious?

Brought car in to mechanic and they bled brakes. Said was a lot of air in right rear. Brakes are still not good. checked for leaks under dash by brake and clutch, nothing, looked for leaks around resevoir and MC found nothing. Any ideas? Mechanic said it could be the pads.

Eldorado 04-01-2006 10:25 AM

well how much is left on the pads? the mechanic should have been able to tell you.

also, what brake fluid are you using?

Jeeper31 04-01-2006 11:00 AM

the pads are brand new. PBR ceramics (metal masters). Using TYP200 fluid.

Razorback1980 04-01-2006 09:53 PM

I don't know how it could be the pads if they are new....shouldn't be them in any case. Pad thickness has very little to do with how far the pedal goes down. The pistons move in and out to accomodate for brake wear. When the pads are thin, it requires more brake fluid for the system but the brake pedal should act the same. If the mechanic can't tell you exactly what was wrong....find a new mechanic. If the brakes pump up and improve, then it's probably air in there somewhere....but if you bled them and then the mechanic had to bleed them again, maybe the caliper is leaking air into the system....do you see any fluid on any of the tires? You may need to pull the wheels and look for fluid on the brake calipers around the piston area. It may also be leaking air from the master cylinder. If I had to guess, I would say you need to rebuild or replace your master cylinder.
