steering rack
seems i have play at the inner joints on the steering rack. can i replace these, or is it just totally replace the whole streeing rack.

How did you determine you nave play in the inner tie rod joints?

well, to be honest, never having looked at a 944 rack, i'm just guessing that they do have inner joints, like most. i have checked the lower ball joints, and they are firm. the steering wheel is fixed in position, so it cant move, and when i grip the tire, i can move it from side to side, and watch the arm move in, and out of the rack. thats about as far as i got today. i have no idea how this came about so abruptly, as there was no play at all, when checked last month ??
basically, i would like to know, if i should just replace the whole rack, working on the assumption, that if one thing is worn, then no doubt the other parts are about to go south too !

When you twisted one wheel back and forth was the other on the ground? If not all you did was twist the steering link back and forth along with some slop in the locked steering wheel.
Seldom do the inner joints on the tie rods wear to the point you can see movement in them. You need to pull the rubber boot(s) back, lock the steering rack with a pointed bolt and then twist one wheel then the other back and forth. My guess is that you have worn u-joints in the steering link. Specifically the upper one right under and behind the brake booster. The upper one is as a angle compared to the one at the steering rack input shaft.

ok, i will check this, although when i dropped the x-member a while ago, i did check the u-joints then. when i twisted the wheel, yes, the other wheel was on the ground.
i am finding that the car "wanders" a lot, especially on uneven surfaces. i intend to replace all bushings, and then get an alignment, after finding if its steering/ joints etc. i even took the sway bar bushings off, and tried polyureathene ones that i made at work. anyhoo, thanks for input so-cal.

I found that the large a-arm bushing is what wears out first. I've used poly bushings but find these are noisy. Next time (if there ever is one) I will use the stock bushings. Haven't found any slop in the rest of the system other than the u-joints in the steering link.

my 1989 iroc z-28 "wandered" a lot on uneven roads with the dunlop p245x16, but great on smooth roads.
