Emergency Brake Help

I am replacing my emergency brake pads and am having trouble installing the top spring. Are there abny tricks to this? The bottom and side springs are already in aw well as the adjuster. Theother option is to have all the springs in and then spread the pads and insert the adjuster but that is difficult too. Any advice?

Thanks

First I attached the pads to the car using the push springs. While doing this you have to install the bottom spring. The hardest thing was that top spring. I installed the adjuster first. then i bought a drum brake spring tool. Like a bid plier. ONe side hooks onto the spring and the other you can brace against the pad. It stretched the spring so i wa able to get the hook to the hole but it didn't seat it around the back of the plate. Used a punch to drive the hook arround the plate.

Dan,

Could you explain the process of getting the pads OFF? I can't figure it out...

The emergency pad? I took a screw driver and pushed in the springs on each side of the pads. When you push in and turn they will detach from the back. It is then easier to maneuver the pads off.

so are those springs that stick out towards you part of the pad? Do you have to unhook the springs that connect the pads to each other, do you have to disconnect the adjuster.. etc?

thanks

Where did you find the pads for and for how much?

When I worked at Porsche last summer I was told its the same pad used in the 996 and 986 and with my employee discount it was going to be over 100 a pad

YOu guys are going to be jealous. I called my local Porsche/Volkswagon dealer. Porsche parts was closed but the VW parts guy said he has access to Porsche parts if I had a part number. Gave him the part number he looked it up and had one set left. Called me back after he went to make sure he had it, said he had it in his hand and it was.......are you ready......her goes......Hope you are all sitting.......$45.00. I ran over and picked them up.

yieldsign2 - Not they are not part of the pad but they do hold the bad to the car. I found after you undo the springs it is easier to take the rest apart. You are going to have to at least take the top spring off to get the pads off. When you do that is sort of disassembles itself.

ok, but do you have to do any of that if you are just replacing the rotors, or can i leave the whole parking brake system alone as long as the pads are not too worn?

If you are just replacing the rotors you don't need to bother with the emergency brake pads at all. The rotor fits over them. Just make sure the emergnecy brake is off when you go to take the rotors off. If they are on you can pull pull and pull and you will curse curse and curse and it won't come off. (Ask me how I know)

Jeeper. You go from one problem into another. Do you have access to Clark's Garage? Maybe to a copy of the FSM. Maybe your just really, really lost at everything you do? Whats up with this? Most of what your asking, REALLY isn't THAT big a deal. I'm sorry, butt, whats up with you? I don't know, maybe I'm mixing up more than one "Jeeper"?

First of all it seems I am the one doing the helping here. My second post said I figured it out. Second of all if you do not like the questions I ask and you do not want to help then please don't reply. Maybe you should also look at clarks-garage and see that what I asked here is not covered there. Please refrain from posting in any of my threads if you are not willing to help. Thanks

Granite, I second that. You are rude and unhelpful....why are you on here? All your questions and comments are ...you people should help yourself. I am kind of guessing here, but I really don't think many would help you even if you posted something, so maybe your time could be better spent doing something other than reading this. Perhaps you should take up knitting or something.

it's funny because I dont think granite has any real knowledge of these cars...

whatever the case, I'm sick of the "holier than thau" attitude.
