air filter
Would like to dispense of the stock air filter set up on my 86 944 n/a. I see alot of types on ebay for a small amount of dollars. I am afraid I will get what I pay for.
Can anybody suggest the "proper" setup and a place on online or in a box store to purchase the "proper" set up. Thanks |

I race a 924S and it had a K&N cone filter on it when I bought the car. I went back to the stock airbox with a K&N. The ideal for intake is low restriction with cool air. The cone was low restriction with hot air.

you're going to get a huge debate over this.
I have one of those cone filters you buy on ebay.. they dont do anything, really, but change the tone of the car... I'll be going back to stock probably. the fact of the matter is, the "proper" setup is the stock setup. Not for reasons of the temp of the air intake though because there are a number of members that have put a thermometer in the air filter and, while driving, the temp is no different than ambient temp... so that arguement is out the window.. one solid arguement is that the k&n filters are low restriction, meaning the holes in the filter are larger, and it's easier for debris to enter your intake... not saying it's going to happen, it's just easier. Also, if you run a k&n, it literally rests on top of your alternator, wearing a spot on your filter right through the mesh... not that great... pretty much everyone's opinion will be to stick with the stock air box.... unless you can provide us with a good reason as to why you would like to change..

I'm ordering an intake tomorrow. We can settle the score on this pretty easy. I've got the hookup with the local dyno here. I'll do a baseline pull, install the intake and re-run it. I agree with the hot air source under the hood, so I'm going to dig around the front of the car and see if I could extend the intake down lower and forward as much as I can. After that, I'll run it another time and see what she says. Obviously it will take a few weeks just because of the work and reserving the time to do it.

I agree is does change the tone of the car, It gets louder and for me a littel deeper. The thorttle is more responsive, dunno about Hp increase but it does help with acceleration. No worries with the K&N filter Sitting on the alternator. they sell a bracket for that. I baught the Intake kit From 9xauto and it had the Braket,Heat sheild,Cone Filter, Kool Billit Anodized adaptor and hose to go to the Timing belt cover casing ( Wich porsche said was no longer needed) so i just put tape over the cover and still connected the hose ( non functional now)
I did go back to the stock box before i did my smog a few months ago. The car did run a lil smother acceled smoother not as quick as the Intake tho.

Thanks for all information. I was under the impression that the cones ( k&n or others) would give a boost. I did not think about the cold vs the hot air. I will get a K&N for the stock setup and go from there.
Thanks |

Stock box is best. Designed way oversize for what the engine draws. Just keep a clean filter in it. Don't cut holes in it.
